: 929/954 calipers / rotor mod?
r6nowgsxr1k 09-08-2003, 01:12 PM Hello All -
I've read extensively on how to do the 929/954 brake mod to the gsxr - i have all the parts - master cylinder, resevior, and calipers - but i was wondering.. instead of grinding down the calipers or having the stock rotors shaved down a bit - would it be possible just to get a set of rotors for a 929/954 and just slap it on? say if i bought a set of ebc rotors for a 929/954 - would they fit on the gsxr rims?
i'm tryin' to puss out from grinding out the 954 calipers :-) - and im a bit skeptic about having my rotors turned down a lil' bit.
thoughts anyone?
or if there is anyone in northern california... say the bay area? that can do a clean grind on the calipers for me i'd pay them for their time :-D
respectfully,
john.
bug1124 09-08-2003, 04:50 PM The reason the stock rotors must be ground down is NOT because of the size (the gixxers and the 929/954s have the same size rotors), instead the way the calipers mount on the forks. The bolts holes of the 929/954 calipers line up; however, the calipers sit at a different angle compared to the stock.
The only way I can see you not having to modify the 929/954 calipers is to either get forks from one of those hondas, or build some sort of custom bracket to correct the difference in angles (if thats even possible). Neither option is very good...so I would recommend bitting the bullet and just grinding the calipers down.
Post pics and results when you are done! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
somejeffguy 09-08-2003, 05:02 PM the 929/954 rotors are 330mm, 10mm larger than the suzuki rotors. the carriers are also offset, whereas the suzuki ones are zero offset (flat).
jaedee 09-08-2003, 08:39 PM I would be more than happy to mill the calipers for you. However, there is this little thing called "liability" that I can't overlook. So I guess you are best off busting out the dremel tool yourself. I have seen the mod before and it doesn't look very difficult, it just doesn't come out looking very clean. Good luck.
sullytrnygsxr02750 09-08-2003, 09:46 PM WTF,,, I CAN BRING MY FRT UP SO THE FENDER IS 4 INCH FROM THE GRND AT 60 MPH.. STRAIGHT UP ANDE RECOVER
GO RIDE BEFORE YOU GO TO TJHE NEXT PLACE
bug1124 09-08-2003, 09:58 PM Well as usual someguyjeff is right...thats what I get for not checking on the exact specs. But either way its not the rotor size that is the issue...it is the angle or offset at which it mounts to the fork...I stand by my second paragraph though. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
And on a side note I have no idea WTF sully said. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

bug1124 09-08-2003, 11:26 PM So we can't talk about brake upgrades, but you can stroke your 750 and revamp the suspension...right. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I'm not sure what you're talking about with this angle thing, but I have the 954 calipers mounted on my 1000 (with 750 forks) and they track perfect and look as if they were born there.
I ground the stock rotors down to 315mm. The pads ride right on the outside edge of the rotors with the top outside corners of the pads just barely over-hanging the edge of the rotor. I just ground down another set of rotors to 317mm and this should eliminate the over-hang. However, I'll just be keeping these 317mm rotors as spares because the 315mm rotors have been working just fine for over 3000 miles.

bug1124 09-10-2003, 11:27 PM I too have 929 calipers on my 750. The angle I am refering to is in regards to how the caliper is oriented when it is bolted to the forks...that is why either the rotors have to be made smaller or the calipers ground down on the front most edge. Maybe the picture below will make it more clear.

r6nowgsxr1k 09-11-2003, 01:01 PM OK - just to touch on this again... but -
i just got my carbide tip and oil ready to go. imma grind down about 2-3mm off the top of the calipers? and about 1mm of the bottom..?

shadyg 09-11-2003, 03:18 PM Ah...Ha , now I see what you're getting at Michael !
John, you are correct in your thinking , in that you'll have to remove more material off the front edge of the caliper. Just go easy, take a lttle at a time and try to fit it up a few times until you get it right. Removing material is the easy part ... but you can't put it back on. Good luck !
