I did a search on this and couldn't find a whole lot on the actual rear spring rate. I sent my suspension off to a reputable shop and I don't think they put in the correct spring in the rear. After setting geometry at 10mm of fork tube showing up front and 338mm measured from middle of the eye to middle of the eye in the rear, I checked the sag numbers. Up front I have 35 mm riders sag with 13 mm of free sag. At the rear there is no free sag and 33 mm of riders sag. I think the front is fine but the rear the spring is too soft correct? If I back out the preload to get some free sag in the rear . . . I think the target numbers are 1 to 5 mm then my riders sag will be even more . . . and I think I'm supposed to have between 25 to 30mm in the rear. I weigh 205 lbs without gear and they put a 475 lbs spring in the Penske shock. What do you guys run? I think I'm going to try to exchange the 475 lbs for a 550 lbs spring.
On a side note, I finally got the thing all back together over the weekend and it dynoed at 168 hp on pump gas . . . pretty excited about that. I'll post the dyno sheet when I get it scanned.

you do NOT want a 550 spring. I think you might have too much spring if anything. I'd say you'd typically use a 450.

Ok, so just forget about sag numbers? Like I said, I think the front is fine . . . they put 1.0 and a fork extender kit up there. The back though, the only way I can get to 25 to 30mm of sag is to crank down on the preload collar and I don't think that is a good idea, especially when the free sag number is already 0 (topped out). Your recommendation I think is to stay with the spring I have, but what should I do about preload?
I spoke to a guy who races AMA on a 1000 after I already got the shock back who said he uses either a 500 or 525 lbs and he probably weighs 30 lbs less than I do. I know I'm not as fast as he is, but I'm not that slow either.

but what linkage is he using?
I only weight 160lbs but i have a 525 spring since my shock linkage is much more progressive than stock. Beforehand I ran a 425 spring

for a 200 lbs ish guy you want a 475 spring on the 1000 .., that is what i have on mine.. and worst case a 500 spring., and yes you should have 5mm free sag and about 25-30mm with rider and gear.....
the 1000 normally runs about 50lbs heavier spring than a 600., i run a 450 in my 600 and really should be running a 425.[which i have been too lasy to put in.......]

PDG:
I don't think the AMA guy has a different linkage because he said go with a 500 lbs before I told him that they put in a 475. Further, as you said you had a 425 lbs before you changed linkages in your 600 and you weigh 45 lbs less than I do . . . so you would probably run a 475 lbs if you had a 1000.
Dave:
Is your geometry on your 1000 similar to mine? I got my geometry numbers from Traxxion . . . because this will impact sag numbers.
I think I'm just going to put a little more preload in the back to get my rider's sag to 30mm and ride it at the next trackday. Also order a 500 lbs spring and put that in to see where the sag numbers come out with that.
The cheaper alternative is to lose some damn weight (now that I've already paid to have it setup for my weight) . . . that will whip those sag numbers into shape!
Thanks for your help.

yes i am almost dead on for the numbers you have !!!! 338 and 10mm showing in the front [actually like 8mm now on mine]
and go for the rider sag.. it is more important anyway..........

Richard has you on the right track. Since he use to work for LE, he races a GSXR1000 with 170+hp, and is extreamly fast he probably knows what he's talking about. Jensen knows a thing or two about your problem also. See ya at AMP next weekend.
