Is there any way to check engine numbers to make sure it is what we think it is? In other words my bro and I are not sure if the previous owner of this bike is telling us the truth about what year and make the engine is. My brother has the title and it is for a 92 GSXR 750, but we were told that the engine is a 93 750. We have been looking into it and think that there is a possibility that the engine may be a GSX 750 Katana. ?????? If anyone knows how to look up the numbers online or has any suggestions, all help is greatly appriciated.

To start with the 92 750 was oil cooled, and the 93 750 is water cooled. Another thing you can check is the cc's, the size is on the base of the cylinders on the right size. As to weather or not its a katana motor some one else will have to lend their knowledge.

The easiest clue is the finish of the engine. The GSXR engines had a gunmetal, grey kinda semi-gloss finish, and the Kat motors are shiny, glossy black. If it's a US-spec `92 model (oil-cooled) then it would have required a lot of fabrication and custom motor-mounts to fit a `93 water-cooled motor in it. If you have a Canadian `92, then that's different... and there never has been a water-cooled katana. You got any anti-freeze in that thing?

I have the same problem....I have a 1995 gsxr750...The engine is gun metal grey (not shiny) and it is water cooled...in another forum on this site I was told that the engine may not be the right for my year model because some kinda fairing brackets were missing??? I need a way to tell if this engine goes with this bike...there has to be part numbers or something...right?

jmlackey,

If the Bike is a Euro- Canadian 1992 750 then it will have a radiator,(not to be confused with n oil cooled) and a 93 motor will fit no problem. The US officially got the watercooled GSXR's in 1993 and like Kat said if it was a katana motor in a water cooled frame there would be alot of fabricating.

ALLENSPEED , the 93 and the 94-95 Gsxr 750s had some differences one of which is how the side fairings are attahced to the the motocycle on the 93 they bolt right o the engine VIA a coupling nut that attaches to the head, the 94-95 fairings used a bracket that mounted under the perimeter frame. the lower fairngs are the same for all three ears so they are all interchange able. I would suggest looking under the frame to see if there are 2 holes there where some brackets are supposed to be.

The frame has the holes, but how can I tell what year the engine is? Is there a difference in the 93-95 water cooled gixxer engines? I talked to the zooky dealer and they said there are some numbers on the engine back by the rear swing arm bolt that can be used to id the engine. Anybody know where to get a repair manual for the 93 - 95 gixxers?

THe 93 to 94-95 engine swap would take alot of stuff to complete it as the 93 Wiring haness is not the same as the 94-95, the ECU is Different, out side of being a alittle lighter, the engines are about the same.

Ok, the frame not only has holes on the bottom, but it has brackets attached to those holes. The head has another bracket that is attached to it. There are 2 threaded holes in the top frame tube that, I guess, is for a bracket also? I found this number under the clutch armature...R720-109399.....anyone have a way to decipher these numbers?
