: Should my boy buy this bike ?
BABY-BATTER 11-12-2007, 02:38 PM Description:
2003 SV650 with 12,000 Miles.
The good:
-Rear sets
-Micron full-exhaust
-Clean title
-Overall looks pretty good
The bad:
-Engine knocks
Dude said it started doing this about 600 Miles ago. From what I hear it could be a spun bearing. Apparently SV's are bad about this if you wheelie them too much. Oil starvation to the front cylinder.
ASKING PRICE: $1,500
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Old Skool_R 11-12-2007, 02:44 PM Well, are you going to fix the engine, replace the engine, or have someone else fix the engine?
EmbarrasinR1sSince05 11-12-2007, 02:46 PM I'd get a real bike like a gsxr, SVs are G to the Y with an A in the middle

Hey dumbfuck... Find me a GIXXER for $1,500 !
schecter 11-12-2007, 02:52 PM depends on if he is firm on the price or not... i could find a sportbike for not much more then that, thats a inline 4... if you could get it for 1200 or so, i would go for it... ride it till the motor goes, then do the 1000 swap?

Chill out, damn, I was just saying they're ugly pos bikes and it's not worth all that engine swapping for. That's all.

Have you ever ridden an SV? Its by no means a POS bike. Bang for the buck it is pretty damn hard to beat, and it makes an awesome bike to beat the shit out of on the track.
It is a cheap bike so the suspension is horrible, but easily fixed..a GSXR shock will bolt straight in, sometimes you need to hack up the battery box to make room for the resevoir. The front end needs springs/oil/emulators.
Kent Brockman 11-12-2007, 04:17 PM I'd get a real bike like a gsxr, SVs are G to the Y with an A in the middle
didn't you say you got banned from an SV forum? Are you no longer ghey?
GS, I'd say yes if you got the coin to fix it and the know-how.
chiefgix 11-12-2007, 04:39 PM I would buy it and try to find a low miled motor on ebay or open up the case to see what is exactly wrong.
BakerR600 11-12-2007, 04:42 PM whos your boy??? you mean your friend? or your son?
DR_EWOk 11-12-2007, 06:21 PM Def... that thing could be a lot of fun!!! And with a few connections you might be able to turn a profit it on it also.

+1:cheers
lucifer_gsxf 11-13-2007, 06:31 AM From what I have seen they do like to starve for oil on long, high wheelies. I haven't seen any other problems with the 650 motors. I know the k3 1000 had problems with loose fit main bearings. If you are willing to put the time into it, it can be a very race worthy machine. :cheers
Drth Vadr 11-13-2007, 08:54 AM There are severl SV motors on ebay now for under a 1k. If your boy has never owned a bike this would be a good start.
justinn33 11-13-2007, 07:48 PM I'm pissed I couldn't afford to keep mine, I beat the shit out of mine, had 65,000 KMS on it, 04/05 GSXR 750 forks, rim, brakes and fender, 2005 ZX-10R shock, and a shitload of other mods like thr R6 throttle tube, brembo master, stainless lines vesrah pads 105 mm svraceshop.com billet dog bones, and stripped alot of stuff off it to save weight (drilled stuf as well, aluminum everything that used to be steel etc). They can be incredibly fun machines, and they are NOT gay. Men drive SV650's fast at the track...little douche-hog fagmos ride GSXR's IMO.
I didn't get passed once for the two entire days I rode at deal's gap in the end of may, and I've passed alot of 1000's at teh track on it.
I CAN'T HANDLE idiots that snicker at people who have SV's. It's an awesome bike that can be toured, tracked, wheelie down fire roads, and embarrass all your local pals on their "superior" supersports. I fricking wish I still had mine. I may buy it back from the guy I sold it to when he's done.
What a bunch of tools some people are. Go ride your silly 1000 to the club on college tuesdays to scope the local tramps and shutup mister "eMbaRaSSSIn' ARe1's siNts oHhhH5"
justinn33 11-13-2007, 07:50 PM And for the record...don't do long multi-gear stand ups on the freeway, they will spin the mains. I've done a crapload of power wheelies from first, and into second. I'm not a fan of wheelies anyway, they slow you down and get you reckless tickets.
My SV still runs awesome to this day with it's current owner, one of the best bikes ever made.

numbah1 11-14-2007, 07:12 AM Personally I'd prefer a bike that needs nothing and is completely turn-key. Maybe I'm too lazy to want to dig into all the mechanical work that'll need to be done but hey, if I buy a bike I'm not going to want to have to work on it in order to ride it.
poolshark 11-14-2007, 08:34 AM With the time and effort needed to put it back to 100%, $1500 is too much, especially if you add $1000 for a motor and plenty of your time (or another $500 for labor). If you keep an eye out, you should be able to find a pristine example for less than $3k in the next few months.

damm you must have spent a fortune on it !!!

Sounds like a FrankenBike lol thats a lot of parts. I wouldnt mind having an sv for gas milage and comfort on longer trips.
Gixjello206 11-14-2007, 01:45 PM I had a SV for my first bike and it was awesome! great bike! if you have the time and money go for it but get the bike checked out before you buy it so there are no hidden repairs going on!!!!!
justinn33 11-14-2007, 09:28 PM Not really a fortune, a proper race/trackday bike would have cost double what I spent. The SV can be whatever you make it.
And that "knock" crap only happened on the 1000's and was found to be a clutch basket issue. I didn't read on the on the second link you found...but all manufacturers make lemons, most notably the recent 04+ R1's have had many reports of engione failure on near new bike.
Don't believe everything you read and I assure you that knock was only on the 1000's. The 650's are bombproof as long as you don't do crazy long wheelies.
Hell...if you believe the interweb then all of our frames are going to turn to dust at the welds over the winter, and our bikes will all break in half the first power wheelie in the spring.
Dread 11-14-2007, 09:47 PM I love my SV, I've put over 30,000 miles on it in the last year..the motor is bullet proof.
I beat the crap out of it on both the street and track, I've had to do nothing other than change the oil and keep up on the regular maintenance (change spark plugs, coolant, many many sets of tires, chain/sprockets etc.) Valves were checked, no adjustment needed.

Yes, I know, I'm just posting the info I have found to help the guy out. I have a SV1000S. Its a beast. Since March I have put 10,000 miles on it and haven't had a problem yet. Just trying to show what problems that are known with them.
05oaklandGSXR600 11-15-2007, 08:46 AM LOL.... jus scanned over the thread...
When i see these bike on the street i laugh and say to myself, "get a gsxr" its like getting a V6 instead of a Supercharged V8....
But in this case if you have the money and know that the engine is gonna mess up, hell get it.... Me personally id get it to trash the sh!t out of it, and teach other how to ride. Basically treat the bike as if its a sore eye and let it see how much you wax and kiss your gsxr... LOL
get the bike, enjoy it. hell then part it out u may get your money back...

:lol Thats funny....... its so funny that everyone looks down on the SV. It is the top perforing budget V-Twin. My SV1S is pretty much dead run with my buddies 06 Gix 600. Gas milage is the same. Ergo are even almost the same. Big difference is the pure torque the SV has. I can bump the throttle at 3K in first and it will stand strait up. I can roll on in 6th with a passanger and pass without a shift. This is the reason I bought this bike (along with the rare factor, I've seen one other SV1000S around and had to wait 3 months just to get my bike after I ordered it). I do alot of 2 up riding and didn't wanna have to beat the shit outta something just to keep up with everyone that was 1 up. If you don't like it fine, knock it all you want. I don't care...... :wackoLike I said before, I put on 10,000 miles in 8 months and haven't had one problem with it. Great bike in my book.
And I know that the first thing everyone is gonna say, "Oh, you have 400cc more than a Gix 6!" and I also have like 100 more pounds of bike, thats not even getting into the R&D of it. :cheers
djkev21 11-15-2007, 03:25 PM embarrassinR1's :ban???
justinn33 11-15-2007, 08:03 PM My old trusty SV650S (2002) was way more fun to ride pretty much anywhere, street for sure, especially since the new Ontario law. If we get caught going 50km/h over the limit they impound the bike immediately, minimum 5000 fine (I think) and that is even before going to court, that is the automatic minimum penalty...super ghey. Same penalty for getting caught doing a tiny little power wheelie merging onto the highway or on a country road. They classify it as "street racing" even when there are no other cars. Ontario just isn't for supersports.
The gsxr is a blast at the track too, but it's more fun to pass supersports on the SV LOL.
Wow. I'd buy that for $1500. I've done more complicated repairs on my garage floor with nothing buy a basic tool set, a torque wrench and the priceless clymer manual.
Damn, I wish that was local.
