: My "Ass Bump" theory

Today while I was taking a shower I was thinking about how to get more traction coming out of a corner.

So you're leaned over around a turn.... and you power out... and for those like me who are a little throttle happy you go WOT before you're completely upright and the rear loses traction.

My "Ass Bump" theory is where you de-hang off the bike and sorta slam your arse on the seat so that the rear compresses while you simultaneously crack open the throttle. Theoretically this SHOULD make the rear have more traction.

Am I being a complete dumbass or is this actually worth trying to see if it works? :wacko

I would imagine if your timing is off, or you still aren't upright enough you'll just upset the chassis.

Dont know what you are talking about but it sounds dangerus.
The correct way of accelarating harder out of the cornners is on the exit you put your upper body lower towards the inside of the turn in order to bring the bike more upright thus more traction. This is the way the pros are doing it and it works for me too.

First of all slamming to WOT leaned over is going to put you into a highside. You roll on the throttle smoothly before the apex. Guys will lift on the clipon, or push on the outer peg to straighten the bike up a lil to get more traction.

But bumping your ass on the seat will just make you crash, causing your suspension to rebound, when its suppose to be compressing.

That is exactly what will happen. If you have a particular corner you want to get a better drive out of take a good hard look at it. The reason traction is loss is because there is too much lean angle. Try a later apex in the corner this will allow you to pick up the bike earlier and drive hard down the straight. The ideal situation is to brake to set entry speed, flick, roll on the throttle, hit your apex, and drive out. If there is still track available on the exit you can set a faster entry speed. THE BEST THING FOR TRACTION IS TO BE SMOOTH AND NOT UPSET THE CHASIS, PERIOD. Hope this helps.

You're just going to send shock into a system that functions best when recieving smooth input.

Will, this isn't a 220lb MX bike and there isn't a 90' triple at the exit of this corner. Smooth, steady and planned are the fastest and safest way around a track. Just like the street but faster.

Thanks for the advice guys..... as I said in the original post this is just a theory..... and possibly a really dumb one. But some of you might have misunderstood what I mean by ass bump.... I don't mean standing up on the pegs and then slamming my ass down on the seat.

Usually when you go around a corner you're hanging off.... and when I accelerate out of a turn I'm still pretty much hung off. And a lot of the weight is still down low and hanging to one side. What I meant was I could possibly get back square on the seat sooner and give it a firm bump when I mount back on.

Sure you can, but if you're close to the traction limit, that bump is going to push you past it. The bump comes from your inertia into the seat. The suspension will soak up most of that bump, the tire has to take the rest. Stay light on the bike and let it do the work.

I'm sure your questions have been answered, but come on man, starting off a thread about 'Ass Bumps' with 'I was in the shower this morning......' :nono

I've pretty much ignored the peg weighting thing. I think weighting the outside peg is definitely what I need to do now... thanks :punk

its not a good idea, you should stay hanging off the bike, ie without moving your ass (centre of weight and balance) until the bike is straight. use your shoulders to provide counter balance in straightenning up the bike.

as you get closer to being able to ride consistantly close to the edge of traction you will see why this is an incredibly bad idea. and if you adopt it you wil just hinder your progress.

Not to mention - if you "de-hang" like you mentioned while still in the turn, you'll have to lean the bike more because you move the center of gravity towards the centerline = less traction.

+1 on what's already been said, smooth is what works. Get off the bike before going into the turn and get back on at exit. Don't move around in the turn, upsetting the chassis...

provokiing suspension stroke is never a good idea.

Any time you transfer weight to one end, it takes it from the other end.

I have raced moto-x pro for mannnnnnnny years. We use the seat bounce all the time. However, turning on an MXer and on a streetbike are 2 different things. If you watch an MXer do it out of a corner his body weight is on the outside of a turn. On a streetbike your weight is on the inside of the turn. I understand you are shifting YOUR weight a little to the outside with YOUR method on the streetbike, but you are trying to combine 2 different cornering styles. Just get in, get out, and quick fuckin about...
