I was on my way back from a short (30 mile) run and was attepmting to overtake a line of cars up a slight incline. I was in fourth at the time and pulled out to overtake. The bike seemed to jump out of gear because the revs rose v.quickly. The bike then jumped into gear with a hell of a kick at ~ 12Krpm. Now the bike sounds really rough when running in 4th like the gears are not meshing properly.
Have I damaged the 4th gear cog or it is the cog bearing? Will I have to get the gearbox stripped etc?

there is a way you can test this....
- start out logging around at low rpm in 1st and slowly crack the throttle open, only getting it to about 75% open. then do this with every gear. see if the revs "slip" out, or if it seems to jump out of gear
- try then being at a moderate rpm, say 4-5K, then whack it wide open. see if its jumps out of gear. if it does, only in one gear (like 4th in your case), then you have a tranny problem.
if the bike starts to slip out and the revs go ski high then its the clutch..... but if its specific to just one gear, its that gear itself, or a shift rod/drum problem... and tranny problems never get better, they can only get worse and you could lunch the whole gearbox. so its either split the cases, inspect and repair, or just get a whole new motor - the cost of tranny parts and labor most times exceeds the price of just dropping a new motor in there, and its much easier (aka you can DIY easily)

Dont think its the clutch as I have experienced that on a bike before. Doesnt sound to good! Cannot be arsed putting a new engine in there. On another thought would a 750 SRAD fit in. If do what would I need?

Yep - good excuse to get a 98-99 750 FI motor. That's what I did when my 600 engine was having problems. Get the motor, the entire harness, the gauges, and the FI fuel pump. It's a relatively easy swap since everything mounts up the same way.

Squid question. When you say harness, what do you mean. Engine harness or the harness for the guages?
