I have an old Honda XL600R, which I'm thinking of turning into a streetfighter/super moto, changing the 21" front wheel to a 17", different headlights, lower, narrower handlebars, etc... Has anyone here done something similar? What should I look out for, ideas, input appreciated.

Motard is the proper term. You can find lots of the parts to do your 17in wheels and big brakes ready made on your side of the Pond. I have a 96 CR500 that has Excell wheels and a Braking 320 front disk. Its a blast but top speed is only about 105mph.

Around these parts they're called both, actually - but thanks for the info http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
I'd like to add that the bike is quite old ('84) so I don't want to spend loads of money on top notch performance parts. I'd rather get parts from eBay and/or bike breakers...

I have seen 88 GSXR 750 wheels on a Motard befoe. They are 3.5 front and 4.5 rear. You could find others as well I'm sure.
