: What's the attraction to the water-cooled's?
M23GIXXER 07-24-2003, 09:16 PM I've been borrowing a friend's 93 750 for the summer and am wondering why you fellas prefer this era of the gixxer? Dont get me wrong, Im not saying its a bad bike, but it seems like there is so much better out there. I guess its personal preference and I can understand if that is your reason but what are the attributes that make this your bike of choice? Why choose the water-cooled's? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
93GIXXER-6/7 07-24-2003, 09:33 PM Man you asked a deep question and I am sure you are gonna get many different answers.
Personally I like the Perimeter frame and the over all looks of it.It has it's Deficiencies but it has lots of character, Plus my bike will still hang with the newer bikes. I will get me a newer Bike (TLR or RC) but I will keep this old Gixxer for quite some time.

duckboy 07-24-2003, 11:03 PM They really are, ahem, under appreciated. That's part of the lure. Sure, they were the heaviest Gixxers made, and soggy suspension made matters worse, but peel away the layers, and there's a lot of go fast for the buck there. Here are the biggest problems people have with this bike:
1. It's heavy. OK, it is kind of heavy, but not that much. Suzuki just decided to list actual weights (or something close) for these years. They got spanked so badly for this, they went back to lying like all the other manufacturers. Also, there are TONS of ways to save weight, and make it competitive w/your average 480 lb. RC51, TLR, etc.
2. The suspension sucks. They came from the factory w/very soft suspension. This made the weight issue seem worse. Any serious rider would spend some time tuning and upgrading suspension, so it's generally not a problem for people who are really into these bikes.
3. It's slow. The bikes were somewhat restricted in U.S. tune (take your pick- 750's using 600 exhausts, 600 engines in general, 1100's saddled w/the same size carbs as the 600, wheelie wires, etc.) Tuning the engines all the way up to 170hp 1100's is relatively straightforward. Also, on 750's, the motor doesn't wake up until about 8 grand.
On the other hand...these bikes were very successful in roadracing, with chamionships in 600, 750, FUSA, and endurance classes. So, there's a lot there...it's just hidden in stock form, or even worse when badly tuned. I'd bet your friends bike is one of these two things.
For better or worse, these bikes are under-appreciated, and are a bargain on the used market. They're just waiting to be saved and tuned properly. You can find just about any part on ebay for $50, even rare yosh or factory kit parts if you're patient. Add to that the Mr. Potatohead intechangability of all the watercooled gixxers, and a cheap bastard gearhead like me can build a fun, ripper of a bike for $2 grand or so.
There, I've told you. Don't let the secret out...
Bobbychet 07-24-2003, 11:25 PM Well said Duckboy! These bike are bulletproof! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
93GIXXER-6/7 07-24-2003, 11:29 PM DUCK You get a standing ovation (SP?) from for that one. It is what I would have said if I caould have gotten my head out of my butt.

DynaMight 07-25-2003, 02:33 AM I like them because they match the weather all year round here in the UK!
Garvey2003 07-25-2003, 05:48 PM This is my baby in back here in the United Kingdom. One day its raining and the next the suns out.
This bike suits all weathers and I love it to bits. 2 of my mates have 1996, and the 2000 version but when I ride theres, it seems all plastic not a real beast like the good old water cooled ones.
There, thats my 2 pence worth lol. Did i mention this is my first bike!

M23GIXXER 07-25-2003, 07:54 PM Couple of you guys mentioned that you want to get TLR's. Thats funny because that was what I had (just sold it). The TLR is awesome and you guys ridin these gixxers I think will love it. In fact, I might get it again when I get the money. While I do think that the 93 750 Im riding is a bit heavy, it doesnt need to be light like an 01, for example. I prefer the extra weight as I feel the bikes are more planted in the corners, like a train on tracks. I ride some new bikes (especially new 600s) once in a while and I hate the instability I feel. I do agree about the suspension though. I didnt know that it came soft like that but it is horendous. Otherwise I think the bike is cool and plenty fast. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
gsxr93 07-28-2003, 10:30 AM You guys crack me up!! I just bought a 93 1100. (could not afford brand new and did not want payments) I used to have an 86 750, for my first bike. The feel is totally different. I am not an experienced enough rider to notice all of the idiosyncracies that the bikes have. It does feel heavier than my 86, but for my riding style right now, it does not bother me.
For the money.....under 3 grand, I think I got a hell of a bike. YOu can get 170 horse out of the 1100? how? NOw that would be interesting.
The new bikes are definitely awesome pieces of machinery, but I have just as much fun with mine right now. My buddy has a 2002 Yamaha FZ I sit on it and it feels like I can pick it up and toss it around. Definitely cool with the injection and all that.
NOw, what do you do with the carbs? How much bigger do you go?
Over the winter, I would like to make some more mods. Also going to have the wheels chromed and the frame re-polished. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif

That's true. I said it was "straightforward" but not really cheap. What I really was getting at was that these bikes respond well to all sorts of tuning. Bigger displacement, breathing mods, turbos, nitrous, all have been used with great success.
Heck, you could throw a wrench at one of these things and make it go faster. Makes those with modest skills (like me) feel like a tuning hero. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The nice think is they came stock with 138-140bhp at the back wheel, but not in the USA. You have the restricted version, with, if I'm not mistaken, about 118 at the back wheel. There is a shitload of reliable power to be opened up there. All of the history should be available for this forum...have a search through, I think you'll find some pretty interesting shit http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bones_GSXR 07-30-2003, 07:44 PM As a fan of the Oil Cooled GSXR's I think the apeal of the Waterpumpers is like going out with a Fat Girl (water pumper) cause she has a nice looking friend (the Oil Cooled), You know shes fun to ride and all but you would rather ride the Pretty girl.

Doh!! Good come back! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/applause.gif Yeah in 92 Yoshimura gave up on the old oiler midway through the season!!! They got all they could out of that old girl then dropped her like yesterdays news for the new Watercooled babe!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/yumyum.gif She was fresh and could go the distance whereas the old girl (oiler) could only go half way before getting tired! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
misanthropist 07-31-2003, 02:54 PM They're cheap and bulletproof, and the weight gives it a nice heft on the freeway for sport-touring. I kind of think that the watercoolers were the last generation of bikes where most riders could eventually push the things to their limits. The SRADS are beyond the capacities of most riders, and beyond that, I think it's a total joke. The bikes are so far beyond the riders it's insane. Not that I wouldn't love an '04, but could I afford the insurance? Hell no.
gsxr93 07-31-2003, 03:45 PM Sweet ride!! Wish mine looked that nice. Gives me more inspiration to work on it!!!
GixxerRacer317 07-31-2003, 08:42 PM My attraction with the watercooled bikes started back in 1994 while waiting on the grid at Texas World Speedway on my old 88' GSXR750 racebike. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Tired of trying to ride around a 20hp disadvantage to the other expert racers on their new 94' Gixxer 750's I started to day dream about maybe someday getting to race on somewhat equal equipment. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif Since money was always kinda scarce I had my buddies keep an eye out for a crashed damaged 92-93 GSXR600...... They all thought I was a nut for wanting an underpowered bike like the GSXR600 but I had intended all along on putting a 750 motor in the 600 chassis..... (people were practically giving the little 600 away but the 750's were always getting top dollar) I wandered into my GSXR 600 for $1000.00 ...... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I threw a few parts at it and the rest is history. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
BusaBrother 07-31-2003, 09:23 PM It was the summer of 95 in cleveland ohio, all i could afford was a 91 suzuki katana 600 with a D&D pipe. Started riding with a few guys in the city and one day a dude named snook rode up on a fuggin sweet ass BLUE AND WHITE 94 gsxr-1100 on one fuggin wheel. I knew that was the bike i wanted to get one day. Nowadas I can buy any bike i want. SO this summer when i bought one did i buy a busa......NO, did i buy a kaw zx 12....no, did i but a r-1...no
I BOUGHT MY 1994 G S X R 1100, BABY!!!

No I haven't......... but back in 95 there was a novice racer at Texas World Speedway that was cheating and stuffed an 1100 motor in his 750 frame(novices were limited to 750cc)..... he never could figure out how in the world he was getting his ass kicked by someone on an old 88 GSXR 750 that was only putting out 92 hp at the rear wheel....... and that was at a horsepower track no less!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/spit.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Stupid ass http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gif
92Gixxer750WN 08-01-2003, 05:59 PM Let's not forget that it take a REAL MAN to ride a watercooled gixxer. The riding position is so goddam aggressive! My back and wrists say, "Why don't you get a more comfortable bike like a Viffer or a 'Blade and take it easy on us?" my brain says, "Shut up, concentrate on getting thru the next corner faster, get your knee down longer and don't overbrake this time you wussy..."

noxious 09-21-2003, 11:49 PM Well I am about to get one of these GSX-R600W 's and I am excited. I want to know all about it. As my fisrt bike what should I watch for. What kind of gas mileage can I expect? As far as I know I will get it in stock with 9800 miles on the engine. It has just had all the carbs tuned/rebuilt, new chain etc. What can I do to tune it up with out spending too much more?

Yep, it's the distance from the seat to the handlebars. My 600 is the most agressive riding position I've ever sat on. I commute everyday on my waterpumper and sometimes I ride for no faster than 10 MPH for at least 10 miles, talk about sore ass and everything when you done riding!
Gixkid600 09-27-2003, 04:36 PM What!! These bikes are hot. Oldskool. . . http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/burnout.gif I want one for a second bike.
jaesin 11-01-2004, 11:05 PM I think they look the hottest... I like the front profile better than all of the newer gixxers... Mine is a '93 750 and when I test drove it, It threw the rod that was already knocking. I bought it anyway because it was so hot... I put a new motor in it in one day and was ready to rock...

patto 11-19-2004, 11:38 AM funny I kinda think them old slabsides look to dated , the water cooled looks cool (no pun intended) I reckon my wr is a beautifull peice of art , I am just as happy looking at it , (which is all us brits can do in winter) as riding it , shit I even love cleaning it
mgk11wt 12-07-2004, 01:10 AM Well just to add my 2 pennies/cents. For what it's worth.
I went to the gsxr 750 & 1100 launches as a young kid in my early 20's in the mid 1980's. I was running about on my fully restored GT550 triple at the time but despite being broke knew I'd have to have one of these awesome bikes.
They had it all. Alloy frames, high output motors.....compare an old contemporary z or aircooled gpz750 or a gsx750 to the first gsxr750......there was no comparison just look at them, these were years ahead, proper race bikes on the road. Amazing things.
Life happened and the cost differential meant that on the 2 occassions I was convinced I was about to go and buy a gsxr I ended up with something else.
I nearly bought a 750m on one occassion but it took until my late 30's to get a '92 750wn (we got the l/c motors a year earlier here in the UK).
What a great bike. I loved it. But I always wanted an 11.
.....and as everyone knows the best of the 11's were the very last WS, WT, WV & WW models. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Best standard tune, best standard suspension, best brakes and a weight reduction that meant they are arguably the best standard handling 11's of the lot. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
When funds allowed a couple of years ago I sold my 750 and got my current early 1997 11WT.
I have spent a bit of money on having the suspension set up (by Maxton) tailored for me personally (excellent job, recommended) and have a full race Micron delta carbon 4-2-1 system, Dyna coils, a K&N filter and a dynojet kit on it and it gives a genuine 148bhp at the rear wheel with no other mods and 21 000mls up on the (200mph!) clock.
I've just put a set of Gilles bars on it and now a fat forty fooker like myself (who has also taken his share of battering) can once again comfortably hoon about on this mentalist fack-off motorbike.
It was and still is my dream bike. Pure and simple.
It makes me very happy, I love riding it.....and whether any of the newer stuff is better or not (until very recently - on some specs only - I doubted it and now) I don't care, this is waaaaay better than me as it stands.
(....note that the all the new 'top gun' stuff except for the Suzukis have only just broken into the 140bhp+ bracket)
Mind you, that new 05 gixxer thou does look killer in black.
*ahem* *cough* no of course I'm not thinking of lashing out on another bike dear *cought*
Anyhoo; it does 170+mph, it's comfortable for the wife (who loves it & - still - squells with delight at the sheer violence of it); it handles (as someone said the weight actually makes it feel nicely planted - although changing the pipes muct have shed at least 2 tons! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif); it stops (the 6 pot brakes have some mad bite!); it looks mean as fook (mines a black one), it costs next to nothing to run and it cost so little to buy.
Why on earth would I possibly 'need' anything else?
I intend to scare my grandchildren shite-less with it one day!

astroman76 12-08-2004, 05:38 PM I always liked Old style GSXR their frame and long tanks are unique, probably this is the only modern Sport bike from Japan that you can recognize it with folded eyes by just touching it! ya they had a 94 and 95. i liked the silver better so got it. i paid $6000, which used ones at the time with over 10000 miles on them were getting 5000-5500. i got 0 down finance and a warranty for basically the same price as used. gotta love it! the guy that bought the 95, had the same bike in college and wanted another one. i think he came from new mexico to get it.

EDGECRUSHER 12-10-2004, 02:48 PM I thought mine was going to be cheap.... so far it's been a money pit but that's mostly my fault and the previous owners' not the bike.

Old Skool H2O 02-05-2005, 12:48 AM I simply love the watercooled bikes . there is nothing on the street like them. THey are the true hotrods. Beautiful.(of course I like all the early gixxers oil or water cooled.Classic lines good looks, just super pimp! I really can't imagine truely being able to switch to any other type of bike. I would like a new bike. Maybe a cbr1000 or an R1. But I know that if I bought another bike it would have to be some sort of suzuki Gixxer, I hear the new style 750's can be bought cheaply and are positively mad in the performance arena(for a 750). Nothing looks better than a 93-95 750. My first new bike was a 95 750 Black and Magenta and if I ever find a pristine( and I mean Damn near perfect in every way I will buy it no matter the cost.(YOu always hold a special place in your heart for your first ride.) Currently I have a 97 1100 that is being fully customized(prostreet). And I have a drag only 86 7/11. I also have enuff parts to build another bike if I just had a clean frame with title.93-95 600-750 or 93 -98 1100. WAter cool old school is appealing for the same reasons as a big block chevelle or Camaro. RAw Brutal beautiful all at the same time. Not to mention the rumble idle that turns into a formula 1 style screech as the revs rise......... Don't even get me started about the clackity klack of those 41 kiehins either....
EDGECRUSHER 02-05-2005, 01:51 AM Well put.
