New gixxer owner and am looking for advice on setting the bike up and also what to watch out for as far as maintenance issues. The bike was purchased with a mildly built motor (165 to rear), front done by Traxxion and a double adjuster Penske in the rear. It was setup as a racebike so it has Woodcraft clip-ons, rearsets, GP Tech fairing bracket, some shitty bodywork, etc.

The bike has had a very shaky start. I took it out for a 20 minute session at a trackday and then one of my teammates took it out and wrecked on his out lap. Bent the frame, triples, and subframe . . . of course the tank is gone, my shitty bodywork is cashed, and a big dent in my new Micron Serpent exhaust . . . you get the picture. Took it to a local guy here in Phoenix, AZ with a great reputation for fixing frames so I’m hoping it will be OK. Front wheel drags quite a bit, but it did before the wreck too. Any thoughts on bikes with bent frames would be great. My frame guy cost $450 to get everything back in line but I’ve been thinking it might need to go to GMD Computrack just to double check it.

Anyway, back to suspension. I’m sending both forks and shock back to Max because the guy who owned it before weighed 150 and I’m 205. Any advice on ride height? I’m assuming Traxxion will give me some ballpark figures . . . and I see they sell spacers too. Always been a Dunlop guy but I think I’m going to give Pirelli’s a shot for awhile.

I owned a Ducati 996 before this and had a lot of maintenance problems. Any known problem areas for gixxers? I hear the 1000 warps front rotors easily.

The bike came with a TEKA unit to tune the fuel injection. Anyone with experience with this type of unit?

The bike is back from the frame guy and I’m now putting everything else back together . . . I think my lesson has been learned about letting other people ride my bike. It’s really, really tough when you’ve only been on it for 20 minutes!

Anyway, looks like there’s a lot of info and look forward to any recommendations.

PS - Anyone have a steering damper for sale?

how does your frame guy know its straight? does he eyeball it?

Take it to GMD and have them measure and set it up right. Forget Max. Have GMD set your suspension while you're there.

Ditch the Teka and get a PCIIIr for it, but since it's built I recommend having someone do a custom dyno tune on it.

Only maitenance I can think of is to clean the fuel filter out every one and a while inside the gas tank.

Good luck

Adam, not sure how the frame guy knows it is straight. He said he puts the frame up on a jig and measures everything from the steering head. There is no laser aligning going on but I believe it is more sophisticated than eyeballing it.

Have you had problems with Traxxion in the past or do you think GMD is just that great? Have you worked with the LA franchise? Anyone?

Don't really want to throw a $600 TEKA unit away. Further, I've heard great things about Mark Salvisberg at Factory Pro (manufacturer of unit). Have you heard bad things about TEKA or do you just have more experience with Power commanders.

It is good to hear that the GSXR is relatively maintenance free. My 996 was a pain in the ass to keep it running. Thanks - Matt B.

Well, I'm sure the guy measures it, but it just seems like there only so many dimensions you can measure accurately. My opinion has always been--bent frame, take it to GMD. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Max is a retard who just digs himself in holes and is just a bad businessman in general.

The reason I say dump the teka is cuz not alot of people have experience with them so nobody is able to tune them properly. Mark is a good guy but in the past he was so dead set on taking off a PowerCommander and just remmaping the CPU. Suddenly now he realizes he's wrong and tries to build his own unit. He sometimes reminds me of Max (though not as bad) in the sense that he sees what you have and says, 'your stuff is crap, get rid of everything and buy from me'

Adam doesn't like Max at traxxion. You could probably get some good work done by LE in Cali and it would be a little closer. I would find somebody that goes to the same tracks that you attend or are closer to you. I'm thinking and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, since it already has the valving changed the only thing that I think you might need is springs, oil and seals.
Go with a PCIIIR or a Yosh box for the GSXR and GMD would be the place to go for the frame but while your there you might as well just let them do the whole thing frame and suspension. Good luck!!!

GMD for the frame straightening. Have not worked with the LA guys, but the Milpitas guy seemed to know which end is up. Hit up coyn586, he will probably have a lot of LA GMD experience. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

For the suspension get some correct rate springs on it, then see where you are at with the compression and rebound properly adjusted. Heavier springs will speed up the rebound and slow the compression, so a heavier oil may not be the answer (Forks only). The heavier oil will slow both com. and reb. Your goal is to have enough adjustment left in each to adjust for different track conditions. Most of the valving installed by suspension shops is generic enough for most to use. ie. This is why traxxion, etc. can get away with selling pre-assembled kits.

Ratman has dealt with Morris at the l.a. GMD...I 've talked to Morris too, he seems like a pretty stand up guy...I mean he had race bikes from TX. there to fix... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you're talking about Dave at FastTracks in Mesa, bro, you don't need to worry. The guy knows his shit. His methods may look a little arcane, but he'll get your bike as straight as it was on the dealership floor. For what you get - his prices are out of this world (in a good way). And his turn-around time is just incredible.

Besides... there isn't a GMD in Phoenix. I think the nearest one is in Vegas (though I'm not sure)

I've had alot of work done at Dave's. I can give him nothing but praise.
