: race SV's
gixxerfever 07-22-2003, 12:47 PM Well I was wondering if there’s any experienced SV racers here, I have a couple of questions regarding this little bike, with out spending a ton of cash how can I get more horse power and still remain with in SS rules,
On a different note what are the advantages of going with a GSXR front end? Also does anyone run a 189 rear?
kippie 07-22-2003, 04:46 PM I have been known to race a SV from time to time, what would you like to know?

well i'm picking one up and figured might as well have fun in the lightweight class, what mods do you recommend, i have the forls done and an ohlins out back, what are the pros and cons of throwing a 180 in the back as opposed to the 160? besides of being able to have preload, and compression adjusters, what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a gsxr front end?? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif i currently race middleweight SS and SB.
thanks a ton
MStingray 07-23-2003, 05:21 AM there are no pros to running a 180 rear. the stock size is a 160/60 so not only do you have a lower profile (55) but you also have a fatter tire (180) both of which are not wanted unless you're posing. the 160 should be plenty. i think 60-65hp (don't quote me cause i dunno really) is what you're looking @ for hp range w/o major engine work so no real chance of spinning the rear up.
FYI, no advantage to running a gixxer swingarm either to fit that 180 rear. too bulky and heavy.
gixxerfever 07-23-2003, 07:55 AM the reason i asked is that i will be running 2 bikes and it would make life a hell of a lot easier if i was running the same tires on both bikes... and cheaper too...
kippie 07-23-2003, 12:34 PM Thanks Stingray, that was a pretty fun race weekend, how did you do? I didn’t see you out there..
Front end wise- all depends on the classes you want to run and the money you want to spend. The only reason I would run a stock front end is for contingencies, Suzuki money, etc. Looks like you are running CCS with requires stock forks, wheels and brakes for the supersport class (Suzuki money) That being said, the stock front end can be set up to work very well with the proper valving, springs, pre-load caps and oil. The stock brakes are also more than adequate.
If you are not married to the supersport classes, then a gixxer front end is a good option, but probably will not help unless you are a top 4 rider. The problem with the gixxer front end is that you will need the whole setup. Forks, triples, clipons, wheels, rotors and calipers. Don't mess around finding the parts individually like I did, get the whole thing at once. The gixxer front end feels a bit more taught, less flex, and handles the high-speed damping and heavy breaking loads better. careful though, gix 600 forks are shorter than stock forks, but gix 7 forks are the same length as the SV, but heavier. Brakes are good, and parts are more readily available. The swap itself if actually fairly simple, we made a bearing replacement for the top with makes it a bolt-up affair.
Unless the front is holding you back, the stock front is ok.
what is the extended eye to eye length on your ohlins shock?
180 rear? no, don't even bother. too big, not needed, and it takes away from the nimble feel of the bike. I understand the same tire thing, but if you are riding right, tires on an SV will last a long time. I run Michelins, and so far this year have gotten 6 races and 3 Sunday practice sessions out of a rear, and I am still on the same front which has 10 races and 5 Sundays on it. I have a 5" F3 rear (dime a dozen on ebay) so I can run the larger 160-165 tire in the rear with I prefer to the 155 on the stock rim.
Power wise, again, all depends on the class you want to run. a good setup to get you to 70-73hp range, with an airbox, dead reliable, is a full pipe, desnorkled filter (grey area in the rules), 150-155 mains, 17.5 pilots, shimmed needles. intake-intake cam setup is good for a few more hp, but yosh cams are better. Don't fuck around with porting, polishing, overboring, or compression, those do not net you much for the money, and decrease the reliability.
If you do not have to keep the airbox (class rules), go with yosh cams, 41 flatslides, full exhaust. That will get you into the rock solid reliable 80-83 range with huge midrange, pump gas, without removing the heads. (remember, hp sells bikes, torque wins races) From there you can go total loss, lightened stuff, etc...
Does that answer all of your questions? Hell, you should be running one of our TwinWorks Factory stickers for all this free info...
gixxerfever 07-23-2003, 03:25 PM Thanks Kippie, now as a follow up question... what is needed to put an f3 rear, i might have one readily available, as for the ohlins i don't have it in my hands yet, but i will call and find out. As far as running your decals i'll run them for sure!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
thanks for your help man.
kippie 07-23-2003, 03:54 PM Make sure the F3 rear wheel you have access to is a 5" and not a 4.5, the later years had the 5", the one you want. you will need the wheel and cush drive, and we have a spacer kit that includes 2 captive spacers and a bearing for pretty cheap. just pop out the wheel bearing behind the cush drive and install the kit bearing. The caliper has to be spaced over using 4 5/16 washers, and you are good to go. The captive spacers are awesome, they stay with the wheel when changing, unlike the stock wheel spacers that require 4 hands and a foot to change the wheel.
good luck, have fun, you will like the SV on the track, it is a very user friendly bike to race.

MStingray 07-24-2003, 01:33 AM Thanks Stingray, that was a pretty fun race weekend, how did you do? I didn?t see you out there..
i didn't go this time around. still healing up from my last getoff in F1 in june.
i got the head bearing from zoran. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif though seems the gixxer head stem is too short? i sold my SV front end to doug adler (forgot his AFM #). i have a complete gixxer front end just waiting to be slapped on after i get it redone @ aftershocks. just wanna make sure i have everything i need.
what i have:
off an SRAD 750:
upper/lower triples
head stem
clipons (stock)
USD forks
entire (except lever) 600 4pot tokico's system
front wheel
zoran's tapered head bearing for swap
what do i need for the swap to go w/o a hitch that i don't have now?
also have a stock rear shock (which i will be at least respringing/recharging).
eehhh...i'll run twinwork stickers http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
kippie 07-24-2003, 12:04 PM I thought I saw your bike in the back of a truck, but didn't see you in the pits. I think adler went off in the 650 race, but I don't know if he went down.
the stem should not be too short, it should bolt right up. It sounds like you have everything you will need. Stock rear shock? I hope that you are kidding.... at the least pick up a SRAD gixxer rear off of ebay for $40-50. I just replaced my rear shock so I will be selling a Fox in the near future, but the gixxer would be plenty good. Throw that stock shock in the garbage can.
Stefan 07-24-2003, 06:06 PM Nice SV Kippie!!!
MStingray 07-24-2003, 07:16 PM nah, i didn't go.
i just got a digicam so i took a pic of it's current condition.

when i tried loosely fitting the triples on, there's 2 head nuts (w/ washers in between) that locks the lower triples to the frame. the 1st 1 that goes on fits fine but the there isn't enough thread to get the 2nd 1 on. this is loosely fitted of course.
oh i meant a stock SRAD shock. that emulsion junk is off.
