Hello everyone! I'm new to all of this. I bought my first bike just a few weeks ago, 2001 GSX-R600, from a buddy. The bike is a bit of a fixer upper and I got a pretty good deal as long as I can keep it running. I've had nothing but problems with it since I brought it home. It overheated for starters, now for some reason it won't start. I removed the t-stat to check that it was working properly, it was. Next I flushed the radiator. When I put it all back on it wouldn't start and the FI light in the cluster started flashing. I have no clue where to start looking for the problem. I have a shop manual on CD but it's hard for me to follow (I consider myself mechanically competent). I was trying to avoid the dealer but it seems they're code reader is going to be my only option. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be before I take it to the dealer and grab my ankles? I'd appreciate any advice you guys have to offer. BTW...this site is awesome!

Thanks, but don't I need a special tool to do that? Is it a tool I can buy from my local dealer?

paper clip, loose wire shaved at both ends or other metal things. just gotta ground the connection.

I didn't even think of that (duh!). I just checked my local dealers website and they sell that switch for $14. I appreciate your help :cheers

Does anyone know what pins to jump or ground? My dealer doesn't stock the switch and they won't get it in until next Friday. :wtf I'm trying to ride this weekend.

its in the trunk. take off the tail and its on the drivers side and is a grey or black cover on 2 wires. it terminates at the connection so just look for wires that go nowhere. pull of the cover and use the paper clip to bridge the 2 wires to gether. turn the bike on and the temp guage will show if you have any codes.

Well I did it! Code 42 came up which turns out to be the ignition switch. 2 of the wires were corroded, I unplugged them from the harness and jumped them. The bike fired right up!:punk Thanks for all of your help!:cheers

I think I may have the overheating problem fixed but I need some clarification on what the normal operating temp is supposed to be. On my recent trip it hoovered around 100 deg C. I know at 105 the fan is supposed to come on. Nowhere in my shop manual does it state anything about what the temp should be. I just don't want it overheating on me again.:scratch

105 is the right temp for the fan to come on or was it 108? I can't remember but its around there. Start to worry when the FI light starts flashing at you at 120c!!

So I'm good as long as the light doesn't come on? That's cool by me. Thanks buddy :)

So here's the deal. I came really close to running completely out of gas the other day, Now after riding a short time the bike starts to hesitate like it's starving for fuel (no indicator lights come on). Could I have clogged one or even both of the fuel filters? Has anyone else dealt with this problem before?
