: Temps Normal???
sport404 07-10-2003, 06:45 AM Hey guys....Just wondering if this is normal and if this happens to you as well. It doesn't seem to matter what the temp is outside, my bike will go all the way up to 220 or there abouts after sitting in traffic for a bit. Also riding in second gear for a few minutes will also bring it up there alot. Why does the bike always go up to the 200's when I stop at a red lights and stuff for two minutes. Just wondering if your bikes do the same. Once I get some open road and get into third and go round 45 my temps will stay around 180ish
Thanks!!
sheehyjo 07-10-2003, 07:24 AM That reading is the coolant temp and the reason it goes up when you are sitting in traffic is b/c there is no "cooling" air flow on the radiator. Once the temp goes to ~225, you will hear the radiator's fan switch on to lower the temp a few degrees. But don't be alarmed that the temp goes that high, that is perfectly normal and, as far as I know, doesn't harm a thing.
sport404 07-10-2003, 07:55 AM Ok thanks. I was just making sure that it was normal for this to happen every time I stop or slow down even on a 60-70 degree day out there.
Thanks
61ache 07-10-2003, 10:58 AM Ya ever notice that on most cars there fans don't kick in either until they sit at a light? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif
sport404 07-10-2003, 11:03 AM Yes I understand how it all works. I just thought on a cooler 60 degree morning that maybe the temps wouldn't go that high. thats all
gsxr-1k-ryder 04-20-2006, 12:20 PM my bike runs around 175 degrees when on the open road. i've seen it hit 200 a couple times when cruising town, stoplights and such. usually under these circumstances, it runs in the lower 190's.never been in the 220's. but i don't really drag race from stoplight to stoplight or set at a light revving my engine.(not saying that you do), just saying i don't really hammer my bike in towns.
as long as the temp don't hit the 240's, i think you're fine. my manual says at 248 the temp display flickers and the temp light will come on and you need to park the bike immediately.
at 284 degrees the displays changes to "HI" and i'm guessing you're about to have some serious problems.
wolph69 04-20-2006, 07:36 PM you don't have to worry until it gets to 248. once it does, shut off your bike so nothing gets damaged.

So 248 is the number I need to worry about? My bike stays in the 220 range when riding in town! That is about 10 degrees higher than my RR. Afterall I live in Texas and it has been hot here! I will be curious to see what my normal temp will be when the weather coos a bit!
redthundr 10-08-2006, 11:19 AM Yeah. I'm in Florida right now.... Average running temp is between 185 and 205 for me, but the second I hit a light it will start climbing towards 225. I got a Muzzy's aluminum fan - it doesn't seem to help too much with the temp, but you don't have to worry about the plastic stock fan melting all over your headers either. It was only like 20 bucks so I thought it was money well spent. I also flushed my coolant and put in Redline Water Wetter, but I don't think it's helped at all. I think the bottle was only 10 bucks tho, so it's something else fairly cheap you can try.
jhall0011 11-05-2006, 04:49 PM Glad you posted this. I just bought an 03' 600 and it always goes to about 210 at a red light. I will worry no more. Does anyone have the breakdown for my front forks? I need to replace one of the seals and don't know how.
HAAF750 04-07-2007, 06:54 AM I have had the fan kick on at 220 and watched the temp rise. 221, 222, 223, 224, 225... I have noticed that if you give a little throttle above idle, the fan runs a little faster and your coolant scoots through the radiator a little quicker. Almost as if the alternator is not producing peak voltage at normal idle. Anyway, keeps me from getting bored at long lights. :)
GSX-R_JJ 04-07-2007, 02:17 PM :offtopic What temp does everybody let there bike warm up to before taking off?
Jason-STG 05-03-2007, 05:01 PM most of the time i like to see my bike at least in the low 100's before i ride, but coming from a 92 600 with carbs to this FI bike, i'll take any temp. its so nice not having to wait 5 minutes for the bike to even be able to function.
the first time i noticed my 05 750 getting in the 200's i got a little nervous but i got used to it.
big g. 05-05-2007, 09:19 AM here;s how it works ...when your moving ,air blows Thru the Radiator the faster the cooler .....if its hot out or if your not moving [ at a light ect.] a temp. sensor in the coolant set to a certain high temp setting of 225 degrees will close a switch and turn on the fan to aid the cooling of the radiator when the air flow of riding just can;t do the job any longer...like wise when the temp. drops or its cold out the sensor cuts the fan back off at a certain low temp reading.....I don't know what the low temp. cut out number is ..

the fan is not on a belt like a car ,the fan motor is not connected to rpm,s its the same speed always ,,,but you may be right about the coolent pump spinning faster at higher rev,s ..it does take a few seconds for the temp. to drop...but reving at a stand still may bring on the fan ,but always increases temp. rather than droping it...and consumes more fuel..
