: new 03 sv650 rider security question
HoboPro 07-01-2003, 10:46 AM sup all, was wondering which way to go as far as security is concerned. I was thinking the kyrptonite ny chain/lock combo, xena disc lock w/alarm or the king's alarm. any opinions based on experience?? yay or nay?? thanks for your feedback!!
btw, fantastic board you have here! anyone in the bay area?
JNM1K 07-01-2003, 01:36 PM If the bike is not in a secure garage, secure it as much as you can afford. Put everything on it. Good luck.
GixxPilot 07-01-2003, 01:37 PM Here's what's left of my '01 GSXR 1000 after using Kryptonite New York Noose chain and lock... Just got the quote from the insurance company today... Had about $12,200 in the bike, they are offering $7250... Minus $1000 deductible, and I figure I'm out about 6 grand - had the bike 10 months...
They tried to steal the Hayabusa in the same spot as the Gixxer, and it had a CobraLinks on it... The thieves tried to cut it, but couldn't... That's what I have now...

Get a good chain with built-in lock and an alarm. The best chains that I know of are Abus (http://www.abus.com), the top model being the 59/12MKS:

I don't know if they're availiable in the US, though...
Of course you CAN break any chain if you want to, but with one of these it'll take a lot of time and make a lot of noise. To be effective, you have to wrap it around something stationary, like a lamp post. Elsewise a couple of guys can just pick up the bike and put it in the back of a van. Alarms will also draw attention and make it harder to get away. Also try to park in places near people and light (and maybe other bikes - if they're not as well secured, chances are that they'll leave yours alone...)
I use an Abus City Chain (almost as good as the one above), an M+S TG400 alarm and, when I'm at home, a Mossberg Maverick 12 gauge pumpgun http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif At work, she's protected behind a fence with a guard with a 9mm automatic at the gate http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

HoboPro 07-01-2003, 08:48 PM that's a nice lock, pretty cool if i can find one in the bay area so i can peep it. oh well...what to do..what to do....im thinking combo of chain, lock, & xena...btw..if the xena is suppose to sound when it feels vibration ....how do you unlock it without setting that damm 100db alarm in your face!! hmmmmm.....isnt this a good question?!? damm this may throw my plans again..what do you think guys??
The Xena has a 10 second delay so you can unlock it with without triggering it http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey, found the 59/12 in the US: here (http://lockitt.safeshopper.com/6/152.htm)
It's expensive, but so is your bike....

HoboPro 07-01-2003, 10:30 PM ouch! $250. going to get the xena and add a chain/locks as i go. thanks for the r/d man...hehe
GixxPilot 07-02-2003, 03:46 AM Watch for the CobraLinks on eBay. Look for the 1", 7 foot one... Saw one go the other day for about $120...
I bought mine at the Harley shop for $199, but it's a 6 footer...
They also make a 7/8" diameter, but I'd stick with the 1" one...

HoboPro 07-02-2003, 06:40 AM now that looks like a tie down!! thanks dude
HoboPro 07-11-2003, 06:46 PM what have you guys heard about the kyptonite super cable lock vs kryptonite hardwire cable lock....im now leaning towards the cable since i figure it;s a better deterrant than the disc locks. any opinions? thanks fellas
GixxPilot 07-14-2003, 06:21 PM The disk lock is only a deterrent for someone who plans to ride or roll your bike from where you left it... If they spot your bike one day and come back to get it later with the tools they think they need to steal it (bolt cutters, dollies, van, etc.), the only thing that is going to keep it where you parked it is something that they can't defeat relatively easily...
From what I have seen, the shielded cable is probably the toghest to cut... I'm sure it has some limitations, and that a thief will figure out how to defeat it, but they are tough. They are also very heavy and cumbersome to have to carry around...
This weekend, the girlfriend and I took off on a trip, and I put the CobraLinks and the Kryptonite NY Noose in my tank bag, and I bet it weighed nearly 40 pounds... A huge pain in the A$$ to have to do that, but I would have to give up taking the bike on trips if I didn't...
Between the two different types of devices and the paging alarm that I installed, I can at least get a little sleep when I am staying at a hotel... I've got about $1000 in alarm, locks, cables, and chains now, though...
Anyway, here's a picture of the shielded cable where they tried to cut it... You can see that when the bolt cutteres bottomed out on the outer piece, they couldn't cut any further... So, make sure whatever you get has a design that takes care of that, and you should be better off than with a plain cable...

Oh, yeah. Make sure you get a lock (cable or chain) that's resistant against ice spray. Otherwise a thief could just freeze it with the spray and shatter the lock with a hammer http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

GixxPilot 07-15-2003, 08:16 AM Good point SVS. I think that is how they "cut" the Kryptonite chain when they got my '01 Gixxer. I'll continue to use the chain since it is only 1 link shorter, but as a second anti-theft device...
