: threaded inserts in frame for fairing bolts

Did a search but couldn't find anything so here goes:

I noticed that there are only 4-5 threads left in the inserts in the frame where the large allen bolts secure the fairings. I convert my bike from street to track plastics on a regular basis. I try not to overtighten them and I am worried about the inserts stripping out eventually.

Does anyone know where to order replacement inserts? Has anyone replaced these before that could give a detailed description of how to go about doing this? Or should I just take it to the dealership?

Thanks.

could we see a picture because im not quite sure what you mean inserts. I thought the frame was threaded and if the thread strips, then youd have to tap it out slightly larger and use a larger bolt or screw.

I had to do this to my 98 600. You can purchase a rivit gun that also does nut serts from Harbor Freights (If you want junk) or from K&L Supply out of Califoria(Really nice gun). What ever you do, DON'T USE THE ALUMINUM NUT SERTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will strip out every time, get the zinc plated steel nut serts.

Don't quite know for sure, but I use heli-coils. They are threaded inserts for repairing stripped out threads. They are quite strong. As a matter of fact, 2 of my 12 bolt holes that hold my main bearings/crank together are heli-coiled. What you do is drill out the hole to a certain size (it will tell you in the kit), then you tap the hole with the tap, insert the threaded insert with the special tool, and then remove the special tool. Then you knock a little tang off in the bottom of the heli-coil and you are set to go. Don't mess them up though, because there is no way to repair the threads if the heli-coil pulls out. They are pretty stong though (I've actually heard they are stronger that the stock threads). If I can figure it out, I will post a pic of my finished install. . .
