Hi all :)

I don't have a bike yet, but I am wanting to learn how to ride and get my own bike. I have asked lots of questions and the guys that I work with give me some advice, but what I want to know is: is the new gixxer 600 too tall for me? I am 5'8" and my mom used to always say my legs were six feet long! I know that I need to take the MSF course and learn that way, and I have been told that I should get a crappy old bike to start with but I really don't want to buy a crappy old bike! Anyway, nice to meet everyone, and thanks for your help!

First one in.. Welcome....:cheers

The gixxer will not be too tall for you but a GSXR bike as a first bike is one helluva mean bike... I wont try and talk you out of it but be safe, take it slow, and enjoy..
I might as well ask where your from before the others do.
There will be alot of leg humping in this thread soon so enjoy.

Also Im 5-8 Myself And Have No Problems Touching But Remember You Can Always Lower It For Around 100 Dollars If You Would Feel More Comfortable Touching With Your Knees Bent

I'm 5'10 and when I'm sitting at a stoplight I have my knees bent quite a bit so if you're 5'8 w/ long legs you should be able to flat foot no problem.

But as others said starting out on a brand new gsxr600 is probably not a very good idea, but I know you'll still do it anyways so my best advice for you is to take the MSF course. That'll be a real eye opener to let you kinda gauge whether you would be capable of riding a gsxr.

If you think the msf course bikes are hard to control, manuever, intimidating, or if you drop it.... please reconsider about starting out on a older slower bike. But on the contrary if you feel like you have total control and the msf bikes are too slow.... you're probably capable of starting out on a gsxr600. Good luck and have fun.

first off... welcome to GDC.

I am 5'-8" as well and ride a 1000... have no problems touching flat footed.

I think it's the coolest thing when girls want to learn to ride a bike of their own instead of always riding on the back... you go girl!!!

You should certainly take the MSF course, being a beginner, you will learn a lot from the class.

As far as what bike to get... I'm not sure a brand new bike is such a good idea... have you looked in to getting one that's a few years old and in good condition??

Anyway... good luck with the purchase, whatever you decide to get!!! :punk

Im 5'7 and have no problems so you shouldnt.

Good idea taking the msf class, I actually found it really fun. Its super easy too!

Well welcome to the forum :cheers

Also if you look in the 06/07 section look in the sticky so you can see all the aftermarket parts and stuff like that.

But always get some good gear

Welcome Chica...
I am 5'6"
My feet are flat and my knees are bent. Very comfortable.
I wont dispense any advice on bikes because I can't.
All I can say is that I LOVE MY 600 and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Go get the 600 ... as long as your not stupid and ya dont have a death wish you'll do just fine. Any bike with some power will hurt ya. As long as you think about what your doing and just have fun (don't try to show off), the 600 will be your friend and the bike will stick with ya as you grow. Thats my 2 cents. I started on a 600 ...

Oh ya, welcome to the forum :)

It's not that weird they just lowered the seat height on the K6/K7's design. The seat height is very very low compared to all the other bikes I've sat on..... that's why it bewilders me why anybody would need to lower it unless they're a midget. :wacko

I actually think a person who is 5'6 should have no problem flatfooting, because when you actually sit on the bike w/ most of your weight the bike should sag almost another inch.

Hi, I am new to the forum, too. I have been riding with my husband for years...We have had a couple of Harleys, and a Buell, but until he got this GXR 750 I have never been interested in a bike of my own. Since he got it though, I can't get enough of the adrenaline! I tried learning on his, an quickly figured out I should consider something with little less get up n go til I get more comfortable...I love speed, and would like to stay in one piece until I get a little experience, it will be easier to stay in one peice when I get the power I want. Whatever you decide, be safe, and get good gear...but most of all have a blast doing it!
