I figured I've done enough lurking for a while, and its time to contribute. With all the talk of these different slider install methods. I'm going to put this whole debate to rest. Like a lot of you, I was nervous about drilling into my brand new bike. But if you are looking for SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE, follow along to my readers digest version of the putty method. Oh yeah...those of you said you did this mod in 20 minutes. I'm not buying it. Let's begin:

Right side:

Pretty self explanatory. Go grab yourself a large metric allen wrench (not in your toolkit), wrench the bolt out, install right slider (the shorter of the two), add a little blue locktite to the thread if you have any, torque to 33ft-lbs. Done.

Left side:

Find your left side fairing:

Remove left side fairing (ref owners manual pg. 7-16) by unscrewing screws first, then find hooks...be careful when trying to pull it off....and pay attention to the "general area" the engine bolt is relative to the bracket. Should look like this when you are done:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/Lfairingoff.jpg

Throw a blanket on the floor, and set it down:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/fairingground.jpg

Once its off unscrew left engine bolt to where you can screw and unscrew it with your fingers.

Push the fairing back on and line up screw holes. While holding it into place with your left hand, unscrew the engine bolt with your right until it barely touches the fairing.

Set the fairing down with inside facing you and add masking tape to that "general area" keeping in mind that taping too much area is better than not taping enough. Press it down good:

Press thin layer of putty into that "general area" on the inside.

Flip it over and add masking tape to outside:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/maskout.jpg

Push the fairing back on to the bike, line up screwholes, and press firmly on the masked area. The impression should look something like this when you take it back off:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/puttyout.jpg

Drill a small pilot hole through the center of the bolt head impression. When you poke through to the other side, take off the putty. The putty should look something like this:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/puttypilot.jpg

Grab yourself a 1 1/8 in. bi-metal hole saw ($10 at lowes), and drill the hole from the outside in. Yes you will drill through some of that blue bracket.
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/holesaw.jpg

Result should look like this from the outside:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/outsidehole.jpg

Peel off masking tape on both sides and push the fairing back on. Hole should at the very least clear the outer diameter of the engine bolt. You can see I wasn't dead on. But damn close.
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/rusty44Gix/holelookthru.jpg

Screw bolt out of hole and clean up the edges with light sandpaper or a razor blade.

Install the slider through the hole.

Now you can screw the fairing back on to the bike. The bottom three fasteners were a bitch.

Torque down to 33 ft-lbs.

In you experienced any amount of paint chipping along the hole, and are paranoid about how it will fare over time, go out and get some clear plastic epoxy, and lighty coat the outside edge of the hole. Add a little blue locktite if you have any ONLY IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH THE HOLE. I myself love the hole. :)

Excellent write up, I went out and bought the putty and hole saw based on the directions here but was actually able to drill it without removing the fairing. I had to be gentle but it went very smoothly. The 1 1/8" saw is the perfect size for this application. Thanks for taking the time to write this up.

no cut means all u do is take the fairing off, put on a bracket, put fairing back on, the end

the bracket redirects the hole to the outside of the fairing

Alternative to the putty.

Set up a laser pointer on something, so that it points directly at the bolt head installed. install fairings, drill where laser hits fairing. Remove fairng to finish hole. Install fairing and frame slider.

I never understood the purpose of frame sliders if you are going to cut your fairings... Isn't that damaging them just to prevent further damage.:shifty

Plus with those you have to remove the slider to remove the fairing. Shouldn't you make a hole big enough for the delrin slider to go off and on? Not just through the bolt?

Nice write up and pictures though. The putty seems to work well.

They are FRAME sliders. Not FAIRING sliders. They are there to protect the frame and engine some. If they do protect the fairings, it was just luck. That is not their intent

Great write up. I followed to a T and mine came out great. I think they look a lot cleaner than the "non cut" sliders. Now I just gotta find a new set of pucks for the lsl case sliders. My bike was laid over by previous owner lightly, I think the bolt bent on the old slider. It was a little tricky gettting the new one in on the left side, I put some grease on the bolt and eased it in and out a few times to re-chase the threads. All is good now. And yes, I did this in my laundry room hahahaha!
