Hello guys & gals.
I moved out here last October & leased an apartment in Roch. until I could learn the area. Well...the cold-ass weather kept the family and me inside all winter & we are just now getting to explore. I was going to wait until we knew the area really well before house-hunting, but the warmer it gets the noisier our development gets. We want to buy a house in the country with some land and I wanted some input on the best areas to look. In the next 5-8 yrs, I'll be building a new house & I'd like to be able to just construct on the same land. I need to stay w/in 30-45miles or so of the Stewartville area as that's where my offices are (at the airport). I want to be in the middle of nowhere. No traffic and no neighbors right up our asses. When I step outside at night I don't want to hear anything but crickets & frogs. This Mayo traffic and overpopulated/uppity attitude in the city sucks. My wife and I are more used to smalltown/help your neighbors type of living...not this "clique" bullshit. I also, though, would like some hills and trees...not just flat windy prarie. We would like to be able to cut some dirtbike & quad trails on our land...flat won't work. We found a decent old farmhouse w/5 acres in Grand Meadow but the area (even though we like it) is flat and all the roads are too damn straight. My commute to and from work, ideally, will have some twisties and scenery. Also, and most importantly, we have young children and their educations and area-infuence are uppermost in our decision. The school system needs to be as good as possible w/o resorting to taking them into the city every day. I know this sounds like I'm being picky...but hell...we are gonna live there.
I was thinking anywhere southeast of here would probably be a good place to start looking (Chatfield, Fountain, Fillmore). I can mortgage in the $130,000 to $160,000 area.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks folks.
