Hello guys & gals.
I moved out here last October & leased an apartment in Roch. until I could learn the area. Well...the cold-ass weather kept the family and me inside all winter & we are just now getting to explore. I was going to wait until we knew the area really well before house-hunting, but the warmer it gets the noisier our development gets. We want to buy a house in the country with some land and I wanted some input on the best areas to look. In the next 5-8 yrs, I'll be building a new house & I'd like to be able to just construct on the same land. I need to stay w/in 30-45miles or so of the Stewartville area as that's where my offices are (at the airport). I want to be in the middle of nowhere. No traffic and no neighbors right up our asses. When I step outside at night I don't want to hear anything but crickets & frogs. This Mayo traffic and overpopulated/uppity attitude in the city sucks. My wife and I are more used to smalltown/help your neighbors type of living...not this "clique" bullshit. I also, though, would like some hills and trees...not just flat windy prarie. We would like to be able to cut some dirtbike & quad trails on our land...flat won't work. We found a decent old farmhouse w/5 acres in Grand Meadow but the area (even though we like it) is flat and all the roads are too damn straight. My commute to and from work, ideally, will have some twisties and scenery. Also, and most importantly, we have young children and their educations and area-infuence are uppermost in our decision. The school system needs to be as good as possible w/o resorting to taking them into the city every day. I know this sounds like I'm being picky...but hell...we are gonna live there.
I was thinking anywhere southeast of here would probably be a good place to start looking (Chatfield, Fountain, Fillmore). I can mortgage in the $130,000 to $160,000 area.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks.

Sorry,

I can't help you finding the land, since I'm up midwest of the state, but seven of us were riding out there yesterday. It was a ride set up at: click me (http://www.sportbikes.ws/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15116)

It'd would be a good chance to check out the surroundings area at high speeds!

it sounds to me like you've got the right idea. You're looking in the right area. If you were to head west at all, you'd get into the praries. Hell, not too much farther west of you they even have windmills put up to harvest all of the wind energy. That should tell you something...I don't actually know of any land/acreaga for sale, but you're in the right area.

By the way, if you and your family like large cats and bears and such, head south down 63 to Racine. They've got a little "refuge" set up down there. It's pretty cool. http://www.bearcathollow.org/

Cool. Thanks Luttersj. We went to Racine last Friday. Steaks at the 7th rib. Best damn steak I've had in a long time.

If you're looking for land, just talk to a realtor. Make them do all the work. That's what they're there for right?

Hey G - I'm actually in Monticello, but I'm actually out for this season. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif
Just sold my bike this spring so I can pay off a couple credit cards, get back on track, so I can buy a new gixxer 750 in the off season.
If you have an extra bike, that's another story. Feel like helpin out a poor boy with a temp ride? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif

I really wish I could, but right now I'm uninsurable through the cheaper insurance companies until November. I got some quotes through progressive and such, and they want about $3500 for the year, and I'm not about to pay that. That's almost as much as my last bike cost em. Then I'll be down to one ticket on my record and I should have a substantial down payment. I've never gotten a ticket on my bike, though, just my car, which seems to always want to go too fast at the wrong times.
By next spring, I should be ready to go though. I'll be on here looking for someone to ride with then for sure.

Ride safe, keep the shiny side up.

- Brian
