Which one gives you more take-home pay?

More exemptions equals less withheld. If you're getting a big refund in the spring, you need to up your exemptions to have less withheld/more take home pay. If you have a payroll specialist at your employer, he can help you calculate the right number of exemptions. Human Resources may be able to do it at a larger firm.

Dont' claim more than 10, though. If you do, your employer has to send it in to the IRS and then you're under a greater degree of scrutiny. Who the hell wants that?

that's a 12-14k interest free loan you gave to the government to use your money for one year.

Ideally you should be as close to zero as possible.

+1. Figure out what it should be and use that number. It CAN be calculated fairly accurately.
