: Gixxer forks on an 02 SV

If I wanted to put a gsxr fork on my 02 Sv it is my understanding I'll need to remove the roller bearings from the gsxr's lower triple and press on the SV's ball bearings aw well as the race in the SV's headstock.

Has anyone here done that? Any helpful hints for doing this without marfing anything?

We had a bunch of bearings custom made for this swap, if you are interested give me a shout. With our bearings you are correct, you use the gixxer lower bearing (which is the same as the SV) and replece the SV race in the top of the head tube with our bearing race, and the gixxer front end bolts right up.

Prior to this, you would have to press out both stems, braze and turn the SV stem to the propper size and press it into the gixxer lower, then re-install. That is what I did the first time, and it sucked.

The bearing works on 96 to '03 gixxer front ends to 99-02 SV's.

How much do you want for one of those? I might be interested.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif

I think we sell them for $45, simple as popping out the old upper race and imstalling this one. From there the gixxer front end will bolt right on. (600, 750, 1000)

be aware that you will need an entire front end, from wheel to clipon. I think the only things that can be used from the SV front is the throttle assy and the brake master.

Hmm - I think with postage and possibly toll, it'll be pretty expensive. I think I'll stick to putting in some Wirth progressive springs http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/yumyum.gif (dunno if you have it over there - German suspension tuning company http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif). I ride street anyway... If I start riding track, I'll have to do with an RS125 - tracks in this area don't allow anything bigger http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif

Hey SVS, you can also do it with the steering stem swap as described on SV rider, it works great, it is just more of a pain in the ass and cost the same in machining charges. That is how I did mine at first, but I switched back to the gixxer stem when we were developing these bearings.

The Gixxer stem is also aluminum, where the SV one is steel, that saves you about a pound and a half... It's all about the shedding the excess weight!

Thanks, but I'll just change the springs and the oil. I just got some Wirths REALLY cheap on eBay half an hour ago http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif Do you know what viscosity fork oil I should use? The Wirths are progressive and about 30% harder than stock. And I weigh about 230lbs with gear.

The stock front end works really good with springs, emulators and oil, you should be more than happy with it. I don't know what else you have done to your front end, but we braze the rebound hole when installing the emulator.

Oil weights don't seem to be consistent brand-to-brand, but the oil that works great for us is Maxima 20W. You may have to order it, but it works for us.

Kippie,
Please email pics of the bearing setup and details. I've got a 91 Bandit 400 that uses the same front end setup as the SV650. Been trying to find a pre-srad 600 inverted frontend to swap, but if you bearing makes it a plugin install the newer front ends are a heck of alot easier to find. My email is Ministock1@aol.com Thanks!

Jeff

a speedo? what the hell do you need on of those for? that's added weight.

The Stock speedo does trigger off the front wheel, and I haven't really looked at adapring that to the Gixxer wheel, but I don't think it would be easy. The gixxer picks up the signal from the countershaft area, but I have not looked at that much either. If you are just looking for a speed readout you can use a bycicle computer, but what's the point?

Jeff, the SV and the gixxers use the same lower stem bearing, but a different top bearing. Our bearing is a tapered roller that has the gixxer stem OD and the SV headstock ID, with the stock bearing height. Have you measured out everything on the 400 front end? Top/bottom bearing ID/OD's, bearing heights? stem lengths?etc.

Stingray, you know where to find us...

well, I had it backwards but it works. I removed the lower bearing from the SV's headstock and pressed in the GSXR's lower bearing. Everything was a straight swap. The speedo is now a cable/mechanical unit instead of the stock magnetic/electric unit. I have a DIGI LED tach and gear position indicator on order as I removed the stock tach. The GSXR rear wheel slid right in with a new spacer and a little clean-up of the brake mount where it wanted to rub on the rear rotor. I took it to Brainerd (1200 miles) and the only hiccup I had was when a bear crossed the highway about 400 yards in front of me.
