: Save Our Sport (rant)
People, People (No one imparticular and everyone) Over the last several weeks, since riding season began, It seems like every other post is "Friend died" or "Rider down". This is so unacceptable.
Our sport is dangerous by nature. Just by getting on your bike and driving it down the street you have increased your chances for dying sharply. Why then, do these people insist on increasing the odds by riding like idiots on the street. No good can come from this action. The street is not the track! No intelligent rider is impressed by someones ability to do a wheelie in traffic at 90 miles an hour or to drive in an out of traffic at 130. The track is a controlled set of conditions, clean roads, no cars, total visibility. The street has none of these "controlled conditions" and still people ride on it like it is the track. I don't care what your skill level. I don't care if your Ricky Hayden, If you are going 100 mph and a car pulls out in front of you, you are Ricky Hayden on Buick. Not the cages fault in that instance. Plus you probably just killed the little girl that was riding in the back of the car saying "Mommie look at the motorcycle"
I've been riding on the street for 18 years or so and I'm no slow poke, but I know what the difference between aggressive and stupid is. I also know what my abilities are and I ride within them.
Driving like this , crashing like this, and dying like this these riders are doing nothing good for the sport of motorcycling. The list of good things that come from these riders actions is empty. If they think it looks cool to do some of these stunts on public roads, listen to what other riders are saying about you. It doesn't look too cool when the rider is smeared all over Rt 93. I can give no reasons TO ride like an idiot but I can give many reasons why NOT to.
-Dying,
-Someone else Dying
-Costly Damage to your bike
-Costly damage to something else
-Becoming maimed
-Maiming someone else
-Paying huge fines.
-Losing your bike to the impound
-Losing your license
-Huge doctor bills
-Huge funeral bills
-Increased insurance rates(For all of us)
-Possible laws to restrict or prevent the use or sale of sportbikes.
(That's right, right now as I write this, a group of lobbyists is in Washington trying to outlaw these motorcycles. If you think they can't succeed, think again. A bunch of years ago, the number of deaths/ cripplings from 3 wheeler accidents (Kind of like a quad) was getting out of hand. The lobbyists succeeded in making it illegal to sell or buy them in the US.)
This list could get longer and longer. In fact when you reply to this add a reason why not to drive like an idiot on a public road. Or if so inclined, why To ride like an idiot on a public road, That way I will know who not to ride with.
To the Idiots that are trying to destroy the sport of sportbike riding; You are not welcome on my road, in my lane, and certainly not in my group. Why don't you just close your garage door and run your bike while you work in there, your death will be a lot less painfull to you and all of us.
Sorry about the rant
P.S. I know the AMA champ is Nicky Hayden, It was an intentional change.

GrandAmEmt 04-18-2003, 05:32 PM 101% correct.
Another thing to ad. You die? You have the easy way out. Think no one else cares? Im an EMT, been to many bike wrecks, and a few fatals. Let me tell you, it fucks up every emergency worker that deals with it, from the first cop on the scene, to the EMT that did CPR on you, even the coroner. Bike wrecks are UGLY. Nothing compared even to the most horrific cage wreck I was ever at.
Every time you close your eyes, you see somone here, with part of them over there, and their insides strewn everywhere inbetween. Its ugly, nasty, and maybe it will take each and every one of us to see first hand (No, not rotten.com) what bike wrecks are really like.
If you think about it, we all have possibly a little less respect for ourselves than most, considering we know every time we get behind those bars that letting down your guard, blinking for one second too long, will likely lead to death. So, if not for yourself, think of all the people that have never met you that will be fucked up from seing you split in half in the new Tunnell in Boston.
By the way, before anyone says anything, I know the AMA champs name is Nicky Hayden, It was an intentional change.

Hey, I think they sticky'd my rant.
Korn007 04-22-2003, 08:45 PM I agree with you 90% Taz but 10% I dont. I myself like to stunt it is alot of fun and gives you sorta a thrill. Now before you jump down my throat let me say me and my friends do it safely. We wear our gear and we only stunt in Empty Parking lots and Industrial parks where no one is around we dont do it on public roads with cars because that is just dumb. You only live once, no point in ending it all to pull off a sweet wheelie. Im not saying we are perfect once in a while someone will pull a wheelie on the highway but it rarely happens. So if you hate me then hate, if you respect me then thanx alot and I cant wait to ride with you.
There is a time and place for everything. I am not slamming people for stunting, I have been known to pull an occasional wheelie http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif But as you implied, in places where it won't endager others and almost as important, give non-bikers a chance to judge us poorly. (Highway, main streets, neighborhood, etc)

We all just need to ride safe and for god sakes just go to an industrial park or a parking lot for the crazy shit.

I'll give you respect for this statement! The fact that you prefer to stunt in semi-controlled environments means you respect the fact that what you are doing is dangerous and should not be done where others can get hurt.
Taz, great statement. A couple of years ago I lost a friend and another is still suffering the effects of a bad crash - BOTH FROM INATTENTIVE DRIVERS. Short of staying home on your couch, you cannot control the environment, just yourself. This is why I no longer street ride (I'm a track addict) - I realized I enjoyed going fast and could not control myself on the streets.
Everyone ride safe!
GixxerMarc 04-23-2003, 08:48 AM We need more riders like you down here in NJ.
BADBOY_750 04-23-2003, 09:04 AM Well for all those living up here in Mass, Those who may want to show off their talent in stunting the industrial park in Taunton is the place to be. Tons of bikes and usually a great turn out It sometimes goes on for hours before the police even think of showing up. you can catch a crew down there just bout every night Especially during the weekend and weekend days..........check it out sometimes

I agree. I've only been riding a little over a year, and have witnessed more than my share of stupidity. But I would like to raise a couple of points.
First, do any of us really ride the speed limit? I agree most limits are ridiculously slow, but it is the law and if we choose to break one, where does it end?
Who is going to dictate what safe riding is? As people's skills progress, their comfort levels grow and what a person feels is safe could easily be seen as stupid by another rider. For instance, I am just learning how to wheelie, so to me, it is risky. For another rider who has been wheelie 'ng for years, it's no big deal and not dangerous.
When riders get together, they tend to do stupid things that they normally wouldn't do if not around others. It's just the nature of the beast and the only way to avoid it is to ride by yourself.
Don't get me wrong, I love to nail a turn perfect, and enjoy the occasional rush of speed by hitting triple digits. That's the reason I own the bike, and ride the miles that I do. My advice would be to ride within your own limits at all times, be aware of what is going on around you, and keep in mind how non-riders will view what you are doing. New Jersey is a very political state, and will probably one of the first to ban motorcycles. Riders doing stupid things in front of non-riders will do nothing to fight this.
Shit happens regardless of how careful a person is, or how cautious they ride. Many of us have had to avoid a cage pulling out of a driveway that didn't see us, or jam on the brakes when a cage didn't see us in their mirrors and pulled into our path. Just keep an eye on what is going on out there, and live to ride another day.
silverbullet84, Excellent points. A few things though.
First, This post was never about obeying the speed limit. Here in Mass, If you are doing 80 on the highway you are probably getting passed by cars.
Second, Whoever thinks that doing a wheelie at 70, 80 or 90 on the highway is not dangerous, regardless of their skill level, is not thinking very clearly.
Third, Not all groups get together and do stupid things (reference the last part of the original post and the group that I ride with).
Finally, While I agree that shit happens, If you ride within the limits of yourself and your surroundings, the shit that happens is mostly avoidable. Not completley but mostly.

Taz. I agree with you. My point was that people do stupid things when riding with others and do things they normally wouldn't do when riding by themselves, and that what people describe as dangerous is merely what one might deem to be outside their comfort level.
My point about the shit happening is that it happens to people who are riding within their limits and riding slowly. But I do agree that if people are not being stupid that it will happen less often.

Good question, We did not lose anyone, but of the people that I know that went down, they went down in normal riding and not doing anything out of control. Sand, Potholes, Cagers were typical causes.
Definitely too many accidents this year but at least everyone is ok and none that I know of were caused by stupidity on the riders part.
eyeonyou 09-03-2003, 09:03 PM The street is a unpredictable place.
delawhere600 10-05-2003, 09:53 PM Just want to say that is a great write up. We need more riders like you in Delaware. No more of these stupid kids that get sport bikes just to show off at the burger king and do stupid crap down the city streets to impress the college girls. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif
cubalz 10-30-2003, 01:48 AM You all can call me what you want but I always go the speed limit on my Gixxer for these reasons:
1. I don't have a death wish
2. I do not want to get a ticket- my insurance is already too high.
3. I have an awful lot to live for.
4. You can never tell what the cars are going to do around you or how the road will change.
You can call me a wuss but I thoroughly enjoy riding out there, seeing all of the sights and making it home alive to see my wife and daughter.
I am planning on riding at the track by next year in more controlled conditions to get any speed fixes that I need.
The point is, you do not have to be going in triple digits to enjoy your bike.
My 2 cents...
Marcus 02-28-2004, 07:52 AM No shit....I agree....everyone use their head out there and stay safe. No highspeed passing and other bullshit.....nothing to prove out there fellas.....just have fun..just my .02
kah869 03-03-2004, 06:12 PM I absolutely agree I am tired of getting my balls busted by the man and insurance companies because of these assholes that cant go one block without doing a wheelie, endo or breaking 100MPH
homeprobe 03-19-2004, 03:11 PM True, True.
Interviews should preclude every sport bike/superbike sale. The interview should be given by experienced riders who know how to filter out ignorant, dumbass, crazed street riders who think all pavement is a track.
bonez7-fity 05-08-2004, 11:10 PM Just wanted to say that a lot of very strong and relevant points have been made.
I am probably going to get shit for my opinion but I had to say it.
My opinion: I am not going to disagree with anything that has been said, because everyone is right. Bottom line its a dangerous sport/past time and we all know it.......yet we still all choose to do it.......why?
I think because we are trying to satisfy some sort of need/desire for a rush, (i.e.driving over the speed limit, the occasional wheelie) Thats why we all have bikes right? It's a rush and a freedom to not be stuck in a cage every where we go and it's a break from the norm. My everyday life would be a lot more boring without my bike and I would just have to find something else to take up that time and to remedy the need for that addrenaline rush.
I admit I do stupid things when people are around, but I also do them when I am by myself. When I ride it's a way for me to escape from the monotony and to get away from things that were bothering me during the day or during the week. I know the second that I get on two wheels that all of my attention has to be on what I am doing and the environment around me or my mom is going to be getting the "I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you this but....." phone call from some hospital or one of my friends.
I could get crushed from behind while stopped at a stop light by some some soccer mom in an Escalade worrying about her fucking make-up or the three brats fightinging in the back and never even know its coming......or I could go down while doing a stand up through traffic at 100mph.
Whether you are a knee dragger, stunter, or just enjoy the occasional Sunday ride with the Mrs. IT"S A DANGEROUS SPORT and none of us are truly safe while on two wheels.
But we still do it.........
ValkyrieGSXR 06-06-2004, 11:57 AM Gotta tell you, EMT's right... Last week, not one but two here in NJ. Yellow drop cloths EVERYWHERE, this guy was at least quartered and the bike was still running. Mind you, this was in RUSH hour, as in traffic going 25 mph! How can this POSSIBLY happen? My eyes are in 60 places at once when I ride, I dunno. You're absolutely right, keep your antics on a closed track. NOT in traffic!
Corneliusjhenke3 06-18-2004, 01:50 PM Shiiit.. i feel the same way. I feel that i am a smart rider. I do not speed, i try to keep the same pace as the rest of traffic around me for safety reasons.

FLYTALON 04-01-2005, 04:25 AM Yeah as an older rider (32) im not big on dying, or trashing my prestine 01 600. i have a good gig as an arcraft mechanic. i really wouldnt want to lose it due to a crash. Long Island is a tough place to ride and there is a lot of kids just hoppin on bikes and dying. Just because the speedo goes to 200mph does not mean you have to test it, it works im sure of it. Im glad that im not the only one that feels this way. Thank you for posting that rant. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/punk.gif
EmpireMotorWorks 05-20-2005, 01:41 AM I def agree......i have only been riding for about a month now and by no means do i think that i am an experienced rider and Yes i have seen my fair share of bikle wrecks and friends that have gone down and its not a good feeling.....all i can say is that i am glad that the group of guys i ride with, even though most of them are part of a stunt team or have been riding for much longer that i have, have pretty good heads on their shoulders and that they are more interested in teaching the newbies like me how to ride and not how to be an asshole on a bike.
prime01gixxer 05-27-2005, 03:03 AM nice post . i feel what your sayin . i was there at one time and thought it was 'kool' to pull a wheelie goin thur town until i got pulled over and cops took my bike for a while. Now I just ride like I have some sense. Be safe out there ppl http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
45592 06-15-2005, 08:09 AM Lots of great posts here! Thanks so much to all for, ultimately, droppin' the knowledge on the rest of us. I believe strongly that we all learn from each other here and respect all opinions.
I am a relatively new rider and see idiot riders all around when I'm out there. Just the other day a rider on a R1 saw me come up behind him on the highway, and as soon as he saw me, his ego kicked in, he stood on his pegs, and pulled a 1/4 mile wheelie down the freeway going 60+MPH or so! We ended up getting off the same exit and he waved me to pull over. We talked for a bit and he proceeded to tell me about all the idiotic things he seemingly does, like outrun the cops, ride w/no plate, frequently hit 150MPH+ on public roads, etc. He stated that he wanted to start his own club, etc. As I don't know many good areas to ride, and he said he does, I agreed to give him my contact info. with the hope that he might get in touch and show me some local twisties. (I would certainly go at my own speed!) Bottom line, I never heard from him. I wonder what might have happened to him! I wonder if he's still alive?!
Anyway, another reason to add why not to ride like an idiot, if not already said... to ride another day and enjoy the thrill we all get when we're out there.
Peace and safe riding to all...

there is a big age diffrence between you and me. If you want to see somebody doing real unsafe things or some sick ass stunts which ever you consider it check out my mans video

WHEELIE1005 10-09-2005, 04:07 AM I have been in Public Safety for 8.5yrs and very well attest to the above comments. I believe it comes down to BALANCE. SPORTRIDER MAGAZINE came out with an article"The Pace" regarding spririted riding withnin the envelope of your ability and carving asphalt without ever going past 80mph. Whether your the next ROSSI doesn't mean squat becaue the race track is resonalbly controlled enviorment & the street, highway is completely UNPREDICTABLE Statements like: TAKE IT TO THE TRACK!!! Mean so much more after watching one of your friends involved in a NEAR FATAL ACCIDENT!. IT REALLY IS GAME OVER. The extra cost of a track day once a month is far cheaper than 8 weeks out from work from a broken limb, 6-12 months of re-hab or 7,500-15,000 for a FUNERAL!
I AM NOT PERFECT & WON'T SAY"DO AS I SAY,NOT DO AS I DO" because now less frequently I show my ass but respectfully ask all forum members/riders please:
HAVE FUN, RIDE WITHIN YOUR LIMITS, AND IF NEED BE, "TAKE IT TO THE TRACK"
I have been in Public Safety for 8.5yrs and very well attest to the above comments. Actually, the pace was published in Motorcyclist in 1991 and written by Nick Lenatsch. Excellent reply by the way.
Well said. Spring is around the corner and the toll will be on the rise. New bikes, more power and newer riders equals trouble.
4or2wheels 05-06-2006, 07:53 AM Just read this post and there's good info here. In addition to not doing stupid stuff on the street and pissing off the cagers there's is another way you can help save our sport.

First of all genius, the post is 4 years old. Second of all, I could give a rat's ass if you smear yourself all over the road. The post was about the repercussions to other riders when you do. Insurance rates, police attention, public sentiment, etc...
As far as being negative, seems like a lot of your 45 posts are pretty negative or at least confrontational.
