Well, seeing as the weather looks like it is FINALLY getting rideable around here, and I will be putting my bike on the road any day now, I'm wondering:

What are your favourite roads within a couple of hundred klicks of Montreal? As a newcomer to the area, I don't know the great rides around here. Any reccomendations?

One word of advice -- there are no nice roads in Montreal http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No kidding! The potholes here are like moon craters.

Still, there must be some nice highways through the laurentians or something?

There is nice roads in the laurentians, but you'll have to talk to some of the locals to find out where there's not too many cops, because let's face it,a nice road at the speed limit isn't nice at all http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif

There has to be some decent roads around Mount Tremblant...I haven't been out that way though. Calabogie is my Fave run http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but thats a good days trek for you

This area (Mt. Tremblant) is soooo crowded on the weekends though...

Well, do you have alternate reccomendations? There must be more nice roads around here, there seem to be plenty of nice bikes.

1- You can take the 148 from St-Eustache and go towards Ottawa. Halfway, you'll meet a little place called "Montebello". In this area, there is a very good potential for nice roads. From Montebello, I took the 323 from there and it goes to St-Jovite (then you're close to Tremblant, i.e. 10 min.) ; it was ok. Also, if you keep going a few km on the 148, you'll be in Papineauville and there's route 321. It goes up north to Lac Simon, Chèneville, Montpellier, etc. On the 321, there are plenty of nice little routes connecting to small towns. Those are nice ones, but short (5 to 10 km).

Note that in Quebec, the roads starting with "1" (like 148) are always more important than the ones starting with "3" which are the less busy and more twisty. Note also (but you probably knew) that odd route numbers are north-south and even route numbers are east-west.

2- Within a couple of hundred clicks from MTL, there is also Vermont State in USA, the Green Mountains area. Rt 100 (apparently very twisty), 108, 105, 302 are apparently awesome. Recommendations from mpdgsxr1000.

3- Parc de la Mauricie is also, from what I heard, very nice but it's a little bit farther from Montreal...and I believe it must be busy during weekends. Watchout for cops and a shitload of blind, tight turns.

4- If you want to meet riders (that can give you other suggestions), Julep on thrusday nights at 8:00 PM is the place. It's the big orange on Decarie near Metropolitan, very close to Blue Bonnets. I went last thursday, it was still cold and there were around 30 sportbikes. In the summer, you can easily see over 50. It varies from stunt riders to slow unskilled beginners (like me). If you want me to pinpoint the place on a map, let me know.

5- Within 20 km from MTL, I can't really help you since there's not much. It's very flat and the road conditions aren't too good. I usually hang around Mont St-Hilaire/Beloeil for short rides. I'm on the south shore so it's close.

6- www.mtl4ever.com (http://www.mtl4ever.com) is a sportbike forum for Quebec (mostly Montreal) SPORTBIKE riders. It's bilingual but most of the posts are in french. Plenty of rides organized (almost everyday). A few guys only speak english and there's no bashing shit or stupid comments about them (like we have reputation in Qc). If you post in english, people will answer in english. Very friendly.

Hope this helps a bit.

Awesome post, thanks a lot. There's a ton of awesome info in there, that's exactly what I was hoping for. Je suis de la cote d'ouest, donc je ne peut pas parler en francais, mais depuis j'ai arrive en Montreal j'ai essayer apprendre un peu. Pour c'est vrai, Quebec est un province francais et c'est naturel pour parler francais ici.

Merci beaucoup, Overbored.

No problem.

BTW, your french is already very good. I thought english was pretty tough to learn (all the expressions and idioms). But when I speak with my english friends, I realize that french is so much more complicated...I'm glad I didn't have to learn it... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
