After a rather nasty ticket i got i figured it was time to get a decent radar detection setup. went online and bought a new Passport Escort 8500 X50 on Ebay. then got a Stem mount and hardwire kit from www.radarbusters.com. i installed this stuff along with a few other features. and ran it for a while.

after a week or two of riding around i realized i didnt care to always be checking the readout or the module to see if it is going off. so i went back to radarbusters and got the H.A.R.D. system (Helmet Assisted Radar Device) essentially it is a transmitter that hooks up to the radar and sends a signal to a reciever hidden in my helmet that lights up an LED by my eyeball alerting me of the detector going off. after only one ride with this setup i have to say i am very impressed with the quality and functionality of these components.

the other features i was talking about was a bit if wiring and switching. i wired the headlights and tail light to switches allowing me to turn them off at will and i wired a switch to the radar detector so i can turn it off while in town and not have to had a bright light in my face everytime i went by a grocery store.

all in all i love the setup and it wasnt too difficult to do.

Heres the pix.

I have the exact same setup and I'm very happy with it.

At night I just turn the LED away from me and it works fine.

Instant-on?

illegal in washington dc and virgina (i think thats all, at least for the east coast) and i have a similar setup. But i put mine right on top of the tack inbetween it and the glass and i used the stickers it comes with on top and a velcro strip on the bottom to hold it in place. Had this setup for almost a year now and the advantages are
1. you can still see your tack.
2. its almost totally protected from rain (i leave it on my bike 24/7 and its been rained on plenty of times. It doesn't get "wet" but the occasional splash or two will hit it if the bike is standing still and the rain is coming in from the side.. ie a windy rainy day.

I don't have a screamer or helmet led. But its damn loud. i can hear it even over the wind, inside my helmet at 100+ mph (tested up to 145 =P). As far as instant on goes .... your screwed. BUT you have to remember that when an officer uses instant on, as long as there is someone in front of you that he hits first, your detector will still go off alil (especially the passport 8500 its amazing), i've had a warning 2 mile+ before i saw the cop.

Instant-on?

It's not a guarantee that you won't get caught, but it sure helps a lot if you know how to use it right. If there is traffic ahead, it will pick up a signal from far away (especially the x50). Instant on on somebody ahead of you will give you a warning and you'll know there *might* be something even if doesn't stay on. You have to learn to use it right :p

heres the deal with radar detectors and the fucks behind the radar..
they(detectors) work, but you cant expect to speed all by yourself..you need a "rabbit" out in front..this poor fuck will get the cop's excited and when they nail him, you get whats left over and that will set your detector off.
i have detectors in eveyone of my cars/trucks..i never speed alone..almost every cocksucker has a radar gun...let the other guy get the ticket..use the detector right and you shouldnt get one your self..

also position the thing so you can "see" the fuck comming up behind you too..

yeah it blocks the tach, but i dont mind. ive ridden the bike enough that i know how fast the engine is going based on speed/gear i am in. i love the setup. it has saved me multiple times already.

Cool. I've had the same setup for a few years now. Transferred it off of my
'03.

And it doesn't block the tach at all if it is adjusted right. Look at it from the side and adjust the stand so its just high enough to peek over the cluster.
And I've just been using a cheap set of earphones. Ear bud goes in my right ear and just plug it in when I sit on the bike. I never have to look at it or get annoyed by a flashing light. :thumbup

That about sums it up for instant on. Radar that's always on is not really a problem with a high end detector. Laser - you're done. :D

Thats what I was thinking. Hes gonna need that radar detector since he cant see his display (tach/speedo).

i like the setup thanks for posting all the pics guys.
but i think i'm going to find a way to mount the detector under the my bodywork and use that wireless helmet thing. i saw in one magazine where they had the helmet thing and a laser jammer.. anyone else see that?

Do you think you could post up a how to maybe with some pics on how to wire the switch to turn on the headlight and tail light ?

mike-s

its a shame that these things are illegal in Australia, else i'd be tempted by them.
Then again they mostly use LIDAR instead of radar here. and have radar detector detectors in them, and the fine for having a RD is expensive to say the least.

Never really known if those radar jammers work. Is it just for laser? And wouldent the cop see nothing coming up and pull you over just because of that? can someone explain because that sounds sweet :)

Isnt running from the cops a lot more illegal than a radar detector? :) I would rather get popped for a radar detector than for running from the cops.

I second that. Cops here in Houston are already a pain in the ***. We had one try to tell one of our paramedics he WOULD transport a patient and that it was HIS 9the cops) scene. Needless to say our paramedic almost laid him out. :lol

I imagine it would just be for radar as the signal could be dispersed/interfered with by emissions from the radar detecter/scrambler. however laser is an optical mechanism, and aside from a physical method of dispersing/absorbing the light between you and the laser unit, you'd need a black hole to bend/interfere with the laser beam.

That being said, you *could* send out a bogus signal randomly, but by the time you lock onto the cop, he's got you. or yo go blinding every other bastard out there with the laser even if it was invisible (they use co2/invisible lasers don't they?)

can you even buy a radar/laser jammer? and if so where?? ( i live in missouri ) and if so couldnt you just buy those instead of the radar detector itself? id LOVE to be able to jam thier radars/lasers... but i would hide EVERYTHING in the body work so that when they did pull me over (if they can) for not even showing up on thier rader/laser there would be nothing to see. can anyone post links to rader/laser jamers??

My preferred way of detecting speed is to choose a "duck", i.e. some numpty that is blatantly going above the speed limit at a pace im comfortable with. Travel behind the duck at a fixed distance of 500-2000m and if the cops are around he'll hopefully set off the disco lights first, a lot more effective & a lot more legal ;-)

You can't legally jam radar with an active device (meaning something that sends waves out). All passive radar jammers (that don't send anything out) don't work. Don't believe the commercials. If you somehow manage to get an active radar jamming device expect a visit from the man.

Except that if that's a car and you're on a "crotch rocket" you will be the one pulled over. Thank all the idiots that have one for that.

Jammers don't work. Search for articles online on this, even. To make you BELIEVE they work, they give that bogus guarantee that they'll pay your ticket if you get one. :rolleyes
They'll pay up to $100 on your first ticket, thats it. They know that by selling the damn device for a few hundred because of this promise, the most they'll ever have to refund is $100, and they still make a profit off of the sale.
Not to mention you will still owe at least another $100 on the speeding ticket, plus your insurance rates will go up.

Detectors DO work though. You just need to know how to use them properly, and get a high quality one only. The cheap ones will only warn you in enough time to pull out your wallet and insurance for the cop. :nono
