: I need a lil advice...
TOEJAM 09-17-2006, 08:13 AM This is my first post in the "Girls" forum, i hope i don't get flamed or banned. :cheers
Ok, i have an '06 600 with some mods. Im going to upgrade to an '07 1k when they come out. Here is my dilemma. I have a girlfriend that wants to start riding with me. She has owned several ATVs but never owned a motorcycle. I know that it may not be relevant, but she is 5'7" and about 125lbs.
I told her that i dont want her to ride my bike. I told her that it is too much bike for her. I told her to take the MSF course, then either buy a used bike or something like a 250 Ninja and then after a year or two, upgrade to something like mine if she feels ready (she doesn't want a standard/cruising bike).
She is like "why can't i just ride yours...you will have 2 bike". I told her that im not keeping 2 bikes. My 600 is paid for so i will keep it until i get the 1k, then put if for sell. She is like "uh, just keep it and let me ride it". I told her that i dont want to have 2 bikes because the secondary bike will get neglected and i dont want to pay for insurance on two bikes. I tried to reason with her and tell her that she can buy a brand new 250 Ninja for half of what im gonna sell my used bike for...she didnt care.
Truth be told, i had originally planned on having 2 bikes so that i would have a "backup" or to make one of them a track only bike. What it really boils down to is that i don't want her to ride it. I think it is too much bike for her and if something bad were to happen to her, i would feel somewhat responsible.
Did any of you start out on bikes like mine? If so, how long did it take you to feel comfortable?
How can i make her understand that im not being an asshole...i just dont think she should start out on my bike?
This may seem a little melodramatic but if i have to be an asshole about it, i will. I would rather lose her as a friend that see her dead.
Thanks,
Chris

I don't mean to be an A$$hole, but she obviously don't know shit about the death or worse that surrounds our sport. It aint all fun and games. :sad
I'm glad that you are looking out because some guys don't know better themselves.
Buy her a brand spanking new ninja and tell her it can out handle any one of our gix, because it can.
:cheers
Suzuki Chelly 09-17-2006, 03:35 PM It's really tough to get a point like that across without coming off as a condescending asshole. Alot of people who want to call themselves riders don't even fully comprehend the abilities of a 600cc machine with the right rider on top, and refuse to believe how easy it is to get bitten until it's too late.
I had a couple years worth of year-round seat time on a much more forgiving machine before I traded up to my 04 600. Still I had a few cases where I almost got jammed up because of sloppy mistakes on my part. If I didn't have the experience there's no way I would have had any chance at saving it.
You may not ever be able to get her to understand that, but stick to your guns, if she's gonna jump on a replica race bike right away, let her go out of her way for it. A friend of mine got a CBR600 for his first bike a little over a year ago despite my advice. I lost count of the times he dropped or crashed it before the big one that finally claimed his life. RIP Jon.
Italian Stallion 09-17-2006, 10:29 PM Don't take this the wrong way, but women are the fucking rake.
You're the man. Stick by your decision; tell her its way too dangerous for her, especially at her size.
I hate how girlfriends think that everything you own, is partially theirs. Am I missing something? If you haven't guessed by now... single for life :punk
GixxerGirl 09-18-2006, 05:33 PM Don't let her on it!! It is way to much power for a new female rider!! Women tend to be skittish on bikes ( me being one I can atest to that). I can almost tell you what would happen her first time on it!! She will give it to much throttle and grab the front brake and dump it!!
If she really wants to learn to ride, then let her take the MSF and buy her own 250!!
Ride. 09-19-2006, 11:19 AM I got my girlfriend to shut up about owning a gixxer by buying her an SV650S.
And she loved it. :thumbup

Then he CRASHED IT
Ride. 09-19-2006, 12:04 PM Then he CRASHED IT :rolleyes You didn't let me finish....
.....Then I crashed it and I feel really really bad.
A blow job will cheer me up! :punk
Av_fansgirl 09-19-2006, 12:25 PM OK!!! tonight then, but what do I get?
Av_fansgirl 09-19-2006, 12:28 PM Ok, on a more serious note, the SV650S is a GREAT bike to learn on. I did take the MSF course before getting on it though.
o0otriciao0o 09-19-2006, 12:33 PM Ummm, I am a girl. My first bike was a 600. Now I ride either a 600 or a 1K both modded and geared lower. I've never been down.(20+ years now *13 of them on street bikes*...knock on wood..etc and so on...) I'm only 2 inches taller than her.
Don't automatically underestimate her. She could end up to be like Mel (Grandevil) on here and outride YOU! :p
Av_fansgirl 09-19-2006, 01:28 PM If you put her on something to big it could end up being a huge mess and she could get hurt. Start out with something small you can always up grade a bike. Remember a bike is replaceable a person is not.
Grandevil 09-19-2006, 01:38 PM Dump her and come stalk me some more, i have my own damn bike already :D
Just kidding.
I started on a 750 but if I could do it all over again (with the info I have now) I would have started on a 600. Also, why should you just GIVE her your bike? Is she willing to pay for damages? Is she willing to take the MSF course? Is she generally responsible? A good driver?
Sportibkes just aren't everybody. Riding an ATV is not a bike.
Stick by your guns CBnTN especially if she is unwilling to take the MSF course :thumbup She'll thank you later. And remember it's YOUR bike. I wouldn't let just anybody jump on mine either.

:o I crash though LOL
o0otriciao0o 09-19-2006, 02:41 PM :o I crash though LOL
:drool but you do it so nicely...and then you get back up and get back on!
I totally agree with what Mel said as well though. (Didn't have time to finish earlier) She HAS to take MSF. I took it THIS YEAR and even after all these years of riding learned ALOT! :o
Not to mention I'm also very particular on who gets on my bike. I can understand your point, but be sure to not discourage her from at least trying.
Make more sense? :biggrin
TOEJAM 09-19-2006, 03:30 PM Thanks!!!
She has agree to take the MSF course before she does anything. She is trying to get into the October course now.
I told her that im not going to keep both bikes once i get my 1k. I told her that i am going to sell my 600 and i will give her first option if she wants to buy it :)
Then i told her that she can get a brand new 250 for less than half of what she can buy my used bike for. She makes good money but she isn't exactly working off the same kind of budget that i am so that whole part about "half the cost" did the trick.
Im still undecided between the 07 GSXR 1000 and the Ninja ZX-10. If i go with the Ninja, maybe they will cut us a deal if we both buy new bikes the same day.
BTW Mel...i never stopped stalking you. I guess i just got lost in the pack with all of the other guys stalking you. ;)
gixxerangel30 09-21-2006, 03:16 AM Height and weight .....hmm....I'm 5'3 and 105
She could get hurt on any size bike....
TOEJAM 09-21-2006, 10:49 AM Height and weight .....hmm....I'm 5'3 and 105

Lil bitty thing ain't ya...
I absolutely agree. I didn't mean that her small size will make her wreck, anybody can get hurt on anything.
Sometimes people talk about height compared to seat height etc.
Another concern of her is if she will be able to hold the bike up if it starts to fall. I told her that once she is rolling, the bike holds it self up. The only time that would really be a concern would be if she forgot the kickstand or maybe bumped into it or something like that. But some of those big Gold Wings weigh a shitload and there is no way those guys could hold one of them up if it were to fall.
She is trying to get into the MSF course now and then she is gonna buy a 250 Ninja so i think all is well.
I'm new to this site but I had to toss in a couple of cents......she should take the MSF course. How does she look on a bike? Does she look comfortable or awkard? If she is timid with a 250 then a 600 will need a little working up to. I have a 600 but I am comfortable with it and I respect what this bike is and its potential to kick my ass if I'm not paying attention.
kt929 09-25-2006, 08:18 PM I have to say I disagree with what the majority of these people are saying. I am not saying give her your old Gixxer, but consider how long/soon she may "outgrow" a 250. Think about it, if you want her to ride with you after she takes the course and gets a lil experience, will she be able to keep up on a 250?
I got an older CBR600 for my first bike. Two keys to my success, 1 - maturity and 2- practice. If she is mature and doesn't feel like she needs to "keep up with the guys", then she can probably handle a 600. The other key is practice, take her to a parking lot to practice basic skills and then insist she take the MSF course (which I believe any new rider should take). It is the best way to learn and get better.
Size has nothing to do with the size bike she gets, it has to do with skill. I have seen very small women on 750's and more. Get her a 600 and practice with her and encourage her to go at her own pace.
I had my CBR for 2 years and just upgraded to a 07 GSXR600. At this point I feel ready to handle it....but one key, I do not expect or believe for a second that I can ride as good as my boyfriend who has been riding for many, many years.
mike-s 09-26-2006, 07:48 AM If she wanted to stick to about the 500's and 600's ->650's. i'd suggest she stick with a naked or a twin, or a naked twin, such as the gs500/er6n/er6f/ex500.
This is because they seem to be narrower lighter and far far less agressive in positioning than gixxers and the like. i only bought a 900 after riding for 3-4 years or so, and am only sort of ready for it now (still getting the hang of it, and i know ive got a LOT to learn about this beastie). i was on a 250 for 6months, then a 450 for the next 12, then a gpx750 (ex750F1) for two years before buying my rf900 last month.
and consequently getting my license suspended on saturday for speeding, but that's beside the point *sheepish grin*
Grandevil 09-26-2006, 07:51 AM BTW Mel...i never stopped stalking you. I guess i just got lost in the pack with all of the other guys stalking you. ;)
You gotta be the alpha male stalker :nono
xoxoamy 10-04-2006, 11:44 PM dude, i'm like 4'10/11, 90 lbs, and i got a 600. granted- i lowered it and got the seat shaved and can BARELY tip toe...haha. i prefer to learn it to one side. (or learning to lean it)
if she has her head on straight, she can learn on a 600 and she's damn taller and weighs more than me. I have another female friend who's bout my height, inch or two taller who learned on her r6.
A couple more girls who are about my size/height who ride 750s and 1000s, if they cant stand up the bike or reach the ground, they lean it to one side. therefore-i think...if they can do it. why can't i?
i'm not a testerone speed freak 18 year old kid. i guess being a girl makes it a lil different.
also-my guy friends wont leave me behind or else i'll seriously kick their asses! so i never have to worry bout keeping up with them. heh
