: Warnng all K3 GSX-R1000 owners
BladeRacing 04-07-2003, 10:37 PM The past few days I have been preping my new GSX-R1000 for racing. I have only put 50.... nice... miles on the bike. When removing the cover to the front sprocket I found this loose http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The sprocket is on tight but the little silver wheel held on by the allen bolt was loose.
I would highly recomend checking this before riding too much!

Gixster 04-07-2003, 10:46 PM Wow. Mine has 92 miles on it right now. I think I'll check it out just to be on the safe side.
Thanks !
eSeMeS1K2 04-07-2003, 11:03 PM is that cover inner scored????
no way id let that be!!
nice info, for all us 1K owners!!

Nigel 04-08-2003, 02:10 AM That is the speedo drive/pick-up. Be careful not to overtighten that little fucker or you will break the drive. Rather torque lightly and use some locktite.
Nigel.
WARBIRD 04-08-2003, 09:00 AM Pushing this great information back to the top.
SportbikesRider 04-08-2003, 11:19 AM Great job on looking out...
Thanks
NYCs1000 04-08-2003, 12:55 PM good lookin.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
jp233 04-08-2003, 01:29 PM yeah, that damn speedo pickup has backed out twice on me, even using blue locktite.
but you don't need that little bugger on there if ya disconnect the speedo for racin, do ya? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
another sign of great suzuki build quality http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif
GSXR Drew 04-08-2003, 06:41 PM I've actually had that thing come loose on my 97 750. It drilled it's way almost through the entire cover. Strange thing was that the speedo never missed a beat. Definitely check and loctite that sucker!!
gixerking 04-11-2003, 09:31 PM well at 240 miles i start hearing this clanking noise. then i remembered this thread so i pulled the cover and voila. that fugger was coming out on mine as well.
great looking out man http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
i would definately recommend checking this out.
maybe mods should make this a sticky for a bit?????
bd_Paratrooper 04-12-2003, 08:19 AM Has anyone had this problem with the k2 1000's. Just wondering.
Thanks,

Thanks,
I was just going to ask the same thing because the sprocket cover on the 1000 is more of a pain in the ass to remove than on most other bikes.
psyko 04-12-2003, 07:58 PM after first 100 t0 150 miles I had two bolts fall outta that sprocket cover
jay0321 04-13-2003, 02:42 AM Thanks bro will check that out.
suzukispeedfreak 04-13-2003, 03:17 PM Before I ride my new silver 03 home from Chicago. I will have the dealer pull the cover and check this. I hate to start hearing the noise from below. Especially when I have a 3 hour trip to get to Fort Wayne.
Thanks for the great info http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
JetSpeedz 04-13-2003, 03:57 PM great post http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
GSXRabbit 04-14-2003, 03:45 PM That is the same bolt on all the late model GSXRs. I have not heard of any problems before this, but shit happens. It's like a lot of things - you want to check the bike out often and have regular service done - I race mine so I pull that cover off pretty frequently though. (and I am always doing something to it)
I wonder if they just figured we'd all pull em off anyway or if the QA still hasn't made it up to standard? The damn transmission in the older models really sucked.

hellcat 04-14-2003, 09:37 PM My bike has 260 miles on it and I pulled the cover and checked the bolt. The bolt wasn't loose, but it didn't seem particularly tight either. It took about 20 minutes to remove and reinstall everything. You have to remove 4 bolts around the perimeter of the cover and remove the gearshift lever from the shaft which goes through the cover. The cover will then pull straight off. At first I had a little trouble getting the cover to come off. I don't think I was pulling it straight out at first.
I put Permatex blue (medium) threadlocker on the bolt and reistalled it. I torqued the bolt to the specified torque of 20 NM (this is from the 02 service manual). Note that in order to torque this bolt, you need a socket which accepts an allen head type key. I also put threadlocker on the cover bolts as insurance.
Jochemk1 04-15-2003, 04:31 AM I also had the same problem on my 97 GSXR600.I asked the dealer yesterday and he said they sometimes had the problem on some GSXR's from different years.
It's not particular a problem on the 03 1000 he thought.

Well da! The 03's havent been out long enough for him to even have a history of them, so for sure he wouldn't know of a problem of the 03.
LuckyStrike 04-16-2003, 06:11 AM I checked mine on Monday, and all was good. I didn't have any problems getting the cover off, and can't see how this is harder to do than other bikes? I also replaced my oil at 100 miles and saw nothing in the oil to concern me. Maybe I just got lucky.
gixxerjeffro 04-17-2003, 07:56 AM This is more common than it should be. I had a simular problem on my '99 750. 3 Gixxer's later, I check all of them. Cheap insurance. Thread lock should minimize the possibility of damage to the cover. JB weld helps if you are too late.... Thanks for the heads up!
http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
gixxerjeffro 04-20-2003, 10:08 AM I also found that some fairing bolts are WAY too tight! I developed a crack around the rear front fender bolt. I would recommend to all K3 1000 owners to pop all fairing bolts loose and retighten them to prevent expensive cracks. With the pastic being lighter, it is more critical to avoid over tightening the bolts.
Just a heads up
http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
1quickgixxer 04-24-2003, 12:48 AM They should make that bolt left hand threaded......wouldn't that make more sense?
ludwig 04-26-2003, 08:36 PM http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gifDoesn't the speedo become irrellevant after first gear? Just a reference point for the size of your ticket. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gif
Volkster 06-02-2003, 06:08 PM I just went to change my front sprocket down to a 16 tooth and noticed that the allen bolt made a big gro http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wait.gifove inside the side cover also. The groove is almost worn through. The interesting part is that the bolt was tight. Suzuki has a clearance problem that I will surley let them know about tomorrow. Will let evryone know how it turns out!
I lost my speedo reading on my 2003 after almost 3000 miles and the allen bolt and the lock nut were both on tight! It looks as if gravel and dirt got in around it and shorted out the speed sensor that reads off the sprocket, that really kicks ass. Good ol' upstate NY. I think we've had two maybe three sunny days so far this year! Atleast my warranty will replace the sensor and the cover that has a hole in it. Now I have an excuse when I get pulled over for speeding!!
gsxr1g 06-09-2003, 08:38 AM Thanks for the info. I will double check mine. My roommate has a 03 600 and he had a couple of bolts and screws loose on his bike. I think the best thing we can do is double check everything, if you can, maybe while washing. Just to be on the safe side!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
wobbly72 06-25-2003, 06:50 PM Im gonna check mine i have a 01 1000 with 13000klm on it ,hasnt come loose yet better be safe than sorry,Good tip dude!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/applause.gif
Atcgeexer 07-01-2003, 02:26 AM Thanks for the info. When I took my GSXR for the first maint service I advised the mechanic of this. He checked and he told me I didn't have the little silver wheel held on by the allen bolt loose, but he ensured that it will not get loose.
It is not a bad idea to tell the serviceman that when you take your bike for service (if you do). http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
WFO_N_FL 07-01-2003, 02:42 AM I took the cover off my '03 last night (putting on a 16 tooth counter sprocket) and mine was loose. It had started grinding the inside of the cover. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Metal shavings everywhere!
When I put it all back together I used locktite so I hope that's the end of it. All of you '03 owners should probably check this. It only takes about 10 minutes to remove, inspect & replace that cover.
KIRTYB1K03 07-01-2003, 05:32 PM THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP! HOPEFULLY ITS ONLY A FLUKE!

BladeRacing 07-09-2003, 12:34 PM After trashing my first K3 the other week at the track I picked up another one. This time the speedo pickup was on tight. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Marcus 07-12-2003, 01:54 PM My 1998 7-fiddy had that problem, but not before 13k. The bolt cracked the cover and then the speedo was flakey until I repaired it.
freddyspens 07-12-2003, 09:54 PM thanks for the tip...im gonna tell the mechanic about it when i bring it in for its 1st service-i alrerady changed the oil cause of the 2week wait to get it in there(1.4kmi now http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)... i noticed the fairing and windshield bouncing and moving and discovered i had one bolt come out and had to tighten the other one thats left, right in front of the steering head..
Blue_White_By_U 07-17-2003, 04:07 PM Check your reflectors for tightness unless you don't want them. I bought my bike yesterday and after maybe 20 miles one of the reflectors came off. When I stopped I noticed it was gone and check the other side and it was not even finger tight...
Later,
My reflector on the front end came off on its own. I imagine the vibration shook it loose. The other was tight but I took it off anyway. Either this bike vibrates at a high enough frequency that things come loose and we do not feel it or the dealers do not check SHIT!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif
STEVES031000 08-02-2003, 02:06 PM Just remove it!!!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Jump1979man 08-05-2003, 03:16 PM I just found out my right side reflector was also gone. The left one was loose. I wonder what else is going to fall off?
Angel1 08-14-2003, 03:37 PM I wish I would have know about this site. I had the same problem at only 400 miles...under warranty at the dealership now...the sprocket came loose and cracked the case too.
My odo and speedo started to go on and off and a few minutes later it quit altogether.
Also, check your fork nut....mine was finger tight.
And I had to take the bike back a 3rd time. I install the Arata system (awesome) and the PCIII but after a week of riding it my bike now won't start....as soon as I turn ignition on I hear this clicking from underneat the tank.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
I hope the dealership can fix it as I want to RIDE???!!!!!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
ZWILLDOG 08-15-2003, 08:54 PM how do i check it
Booutz 08-19-2003, 04:41 PM Just did my 1st service, i spoke with the mechanic and he said that none of the K3 that had come thru his centre had any problems re this... including mine.
Thanks for the heads up tho.
bikerbeng 08-22-2003, 02:56 PM I had the service guy check mine out before I rode it from the shop. They stated there wasn't any problems. Just picked up my K3 earlier this week :-)
shineydave 08-22-2003, 07:03 PM reminds me of a conversation i had at sherbourne cafe the other week, owner of a brand new sv1000 was telling me it happened on his, don't look like it's limited to the gixers
Aircrftr 08-26-2003, 12:34 AM I've had my '03 1K for about a month now. This morning I checked my speedo target on the sprocket. Still nice and tight. But, looking at my front forks, I noticed one of my reflectors missing. Must be alot of high freq. vibes on this cycle.
I do have a question. after reading about the air shift kits, I decided to try shifting without the clutch in the "point and squirt" mode, and find that with just flicking the wrist on the throttle and shifting without the clutch, gear transitions are alot smoother. Does anyone else do this regularly? Has anyone shelled a gearbox doing this?

My reflector buzzed off also.
Concerning your shifting; are you upshifting or downshifting without the clutch? I use the clutch most of the time but I understand that if you don't snyc the gears correctly during a shift that it creates excessive damage. (syncros)? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Aircrftr 09-04-2003, 12:56 AM I only shift without the clutch when shifting up. On my dirt bike I did this all the time while in wheelies. (it's the only way to keep power smooth so you don't let the front wheel fall down or throw yourself backward) Last thing I would do is hurt my new GIXR, but it hasn't been a problem yet.
P.S. hav'nt done shifting during wheelies yet on the 1K gsxr, at high revs the throttle is MUCHO touchy!
Dan
thefleshrocket 09-05-2003, 02:13 AM I got sent to this thread from a thread I posted in sportbikes.com but it doesn't really help me too much when the pics from the first post show up as red Xs. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
Anyone with a semi-decent web host have the pics saved? Or, even better, send them to me and I will host them for this thread.
My '03 Gixxer 1000 has a knocking noise coming from the left-hand side (about 500 miles on i so far) and I'd like to figure out if this is the problem being mentioned here.
Angel1 09-05-2003, 10:09 AM that's it....mine made the noise for a few miles before it went "KAPOOT"....

Dakkine 09-08-2003, 07:46 PM Well this is what I found. Ate right through it. Metal shavings everywhere. Gonna take it to the dealer tommorrow. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif WTF!! Is this an issue with a lot of the '03's? Don't know if this is the jingling noise I heard but I guess I soon find out. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/Picture_006b0.JPG
Can the metal shavings have an effect on the chain or the life of the chain?
balistc1000 09-19-2003, 09:55 PM Just checked mine with 550miles and it was still tight.
GsxRyan750 09-23-2003, 11:28 AM Mine backed out on my '99 750 and chewed the throttle sensor to bits. I didn't notice until my speedo started acting up. Suzuki fixed it for me though. I'll definitely be checking it on my new '03 gixxer. That reminds me, I need to update my profile a bit.
It nearly chewed a hole in my counter shaft sprocket cover of my '00 750 before I caught it. I knew something was wrong by the noise it was making when spinning the wheel on the stand. Blue loctite is working so far, but I keep a close eye on it.
ArcticWhite 09-27-2003, 11:20 AM Well, I just performed my 600mile service on my 1k3. I found about 10 bolts that I would consider loose enough to back out over time. Some of the bolts were: brake caliper bolts, mounting point bolts (rad mount bolts, etc), triple clamp bolts, fork axle bolts and some engine cover bolts. None of the engine mount bolts were loose.
I would have to say you would be crazy to have one of these bikes and not go through all accessable bolts!
On my previous 1999 ZX9R, I found only one bolt loose at its 600mile service. So, either the suzuki build quality is not quite as good, or the bike has more vibrations in it that are loosening bolts.
I am definitely going to go through them all again on the next few oil changes to see if anything loosens up.
Anthony D 09-28-2003, 04:16 PM can we get the pics re-posted? they are just showing up as the dreaded red x's. i want to know what to look for when i pick up my k3 next week. thanks!
Dakkine 09-28-2003, 08:23 PM Here's my cover that was all ate up. Notice the chunk of metal jammed in my speedo sensor.

srainey 11-18-2003, 09:35 PM This post made me go out to the garage and check mine,I was relieved to see it was still on very tight after almost 1400 miles now. SILGSXR1K 11-26-2003, 04:14 PM definitly thanks for the heads up!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I checked mine and it was fine but just knowing that were all looking out for each other makes the world that much better http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
racerboy 11-27-2003, 01:22 PM I believe the factory started to lock-tite the shite out of it. Should have no more problems. Mine are good. Now the fairing mount is a different story.
finallygotit 01-19-2004, 03:02 PM Did anyone who had problems with this being loose hear any squeaking noise as a result?
Dakkine 01-19-2004, 05:20 PM The easiest thing for you to do is just check it. Takes 10 minutes tops. Loosen the shifter rod at the shaft on the casing and pull it off. Then take out the four bolts holding the cover on and inspect. If that's not it then at least you'll know. Mine sqeaks but only when opening or closing the throttle or downshifting. I'm sure it's the set motor on mine. Oh yea, to answer you question, no mine did not squeak when this happened. Let us know what you find. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
jbsteven 01-19-2004, 10:57 PM at 400 miles mine had the front fairing stay bolts back right out. front end was wagging all over the place.

finallygotit 01-20-2004, 04:45 AM Thanks for the instructions, I needed them. I took the cover off and the speedo nut almost feel into my hand. There is a spot on the cover where the nut was contacting.(some metal shavings to) Took it for a test ride after tightening and all is quiet. Thanks again.
JJGaw 01-20-2004, 05:35 AM Hi all,
I just went through the bike with a torque wrench....now that I have a factory service manual...I was fortunate, all the bolts and nuts that I could reach were right on spec...I have 840 miles on the clock now..
I had already removed and loctited the crap out of my speedo sensor bolt after reading about Dakkine's mess with his bike.......mine was tight, but I feel it is far better to check it, remove it and locktite it yourself so you can rest easy about it... and avoid the problems...
Take care and ride safe...
