: 900rr prombelms...???

One of my friends, has a 97 Honda 900rr, and it just stopped running. It was low on oil, so he put some in it, checked the level, which was just under the full line, and road it down the road. Not a 1/4 mile later, the bike shut off, and the rear locked up causing him to slide until it was put in neutral or the clutch was pulled in. We checked the fuses we could find, and none are blown. When you hit the starter, it clicks like batery/cylynoid promlems. If you keep hitting the starter button, it will eventualy turn a couple times but that is it. The bike does not start up.

It was running fine before that, just puffed smoke when you would get on it like most carbed bikes I have seen do. We checked the oil again later, and it filled the glass up. How is that possible? Is it possible that there is to much oil in it?

Side note, the bike had to be re-wired when he got it, due to someone previously hacking the harness to put in new things. New rectfire was put on, as with new plugs. He took it to a shop, and had the wireing and rectifire replaced. We changed the plugs out. It ran fine until the other day.

What would you all suggest to check, or do to see if the motor is blown/ what the problem could be? I want to rule out anything that might be the problem, before the motor is tore apart and rebuilt. All help is appreciated.:cheers

It sounds like the engine is locked up. My guess is that it was rode to far without enough oil and it caused too much damage before he was able to add the oil. Oil levels will change minumally from idle and just finishing a ride. A little over full probably won't hurt anything serious, just may cause a little smoke.

The rear wheel locking and click/ click starter sound definatley sounds like a seized engine. If it's spinning a little after it sits for a while it's probably just because the metals have cooled down and has a little play, but it won't run again.

I doubt that the engine is rebuildable, usually when an engine starves for oil it causes massive internal damage. I would replace the engine with a known good engine. I would have the local shop verify this before I replaced the engine..

Sounds to me like a seized motor, or a hydro locked motor....... sorry.

See if you can take the flywheel cover off and turn the motor by hand with it in neutral... that will answer that question.

The bike rolled in neutral, but would that have anything to do with the flywheel? I don't think it would. I am thinking he needs to just buy another motor, and have it tore down and looked at before he puts it on. How common are the 900rr motors? Is it going to be a hard find?

I recomend you post this up at http://cbrworld.net/forums/default.aspx, that is an excellent forum for Hondas. There will be someone there that can help you out with any other questions you may have on the 900RR.
