: Building A Track Bike

I've got the opportunity to pick up a '97 frame & swing arm for a case of beer. Been wanting to get to the track but not with my street bike. So I'm thinking of building a track only bike. Here's a list of ideas I have for the bike.

'00-'03 750 motor
K series forks & wheels
K series shock

I've read the writeups on 1000 swap. But I don't want that much power the track. I remember linking to an outfit that sells motor mounts for the conversion but can't remember the name. Anyone know their name? BTW, I know I'll need guages, ecu, wiring harness, 98/99 gas tank, & air box I believe. What about exhaust? I assume headers off the 750 motor but what about midpipe & can? Would I be able to use the same for k series motor or would some fabrication be needed?

What else would I need for this buildup besides the obvious(body work, calipers from K series, etc?

Any info & links would be very helpful.

Thanks,

O

The 750 engine will be a heap of fun in the SRAD frame! I cant think of the name of the company who do the mount kit. In any case I dont think those kits are for SRADs. I think those kits are for putting 1000cc K-engines into 600 and 750 K-frames. I just made my own as per the 1000 write up. It sounds a bit tricky but isnt, once you get into it.

But with the rear shock, forget about the K-model one. They are the wrong length and the guru's say that the SRAD shock was a better quality unit anyway. Get a post 98' one cos they have the temperature compensating valve which maintains shock performance as the temperature increases. And have it rebuilt.

With the K forks, if you use 750 or 1000 forks make sure you use the original SRAD 750 (50mm) triple trees because apparently the K-models had a different offset built into the clamps.

Sounds like a cool project.
I recently built this bike from a wreck for a track bike, but stuck will all 96-99 generation parts.

If you use SRAD clamps, you have to use either an SRAD front wheel or use 1mm spacers for the K wheel, since the distance between fork legs are different. See the sticky about this in this forum.

Also - if you're "just" going for a 750, I'd go for a '98-'99 750 instead. It bolts right in while you have to do some work to make the '00-'03 fit - and the difference between the two aren't big enough for that, IMHO. If you did a 1000 swap, I could understand it :D

I am doing the same right now. Amd agree with SVS the 00up 750 motor will not give enough band for the buck, and unless you have a inside deal can usally find a decent 98/99 injected motor for less then you would a 00up and will not have to do any extra work in mounting the motor. There is less then I believe 5hp difference easily over come by a quality exhaust and some dyno time.
Get a good steering damper, and quality case covers with the savings.

Thanks for the replies. Yep, I read the write-up abt the k-series wheels & using the 1000 forks. Probably will go with those 'cause it's simple. Hybrid racing is the company that has the mounts. I think I'm just gonna go with '98-'99 750. Not looking to have to do alot of fabrication. I'm basically looking for something that bolts up.

Nice bike Ryno. That's exactly what I'm looking to do.

I swapped a '97 750 (carbed) into my '98 600 frame - clean, easy fit. Getting the engine itself in was really just a matter of dropping the 600 (used a helper and a hydraulic floor jack), lining the 750 up with the frame bolt holes and sliding the two rear bolts in - after that it was just reassembly :cool

Having done it, I'd suppose I could drop an engine and reinstall it in maybe 1½ hours - most of that time spent on removing stuff that's in the way :D

I put the 2k and up motor in my srad. At the time I could not find a good motor for my 99 so I bought a 2000 motor and cut the mounts and had them rewelded. Turned out ok. I used the srad stock header and cut and welded a piece so I could use my scorpion high mount from my gsxr 1000. Used the guages and harness for the 2k motor. I am wanting to do the cam swap and upgrade the tranny since the 2k motors have weak trannys. If you decide to do this, look for the 2001 up motor. I had to cut the crossover pipe on bottom of header, it doesnt do anything, Looking for a good used yosh head pipe for 2000 and up. I dont know of anyone the does the mount conversion that are premade either.

+1

99 750 = a couple of hours work

00 750 = a solid day + tools + skidmarks instructions + a bit of mechanical ability + irreversibly modifying your frame

And at the end of the day, the 00 750 might make up to 5 HP more, but it a lot more works for stuff all extra power AND they have junk gearboxes. Its worth it for the 1000cc motor!

I like the matt black too. Think I'll do my track fairings like that. Is it a rattle can job?

Have fun on thurs!

Ryno,

Your upper & side fairings appear to be oem. Are they? If so, what'd you do with the opening for the headlight? Or is the headlight still there?

Look at the first pic on the first page. There seems to be no headlight in the fairing.

Rattle can job alright. It looks better in the pics than in person.
There is no headlight. It's OEM side fairings and an OEM style upper but without the headlight cut out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/Ryno1/GSXR06again.jpg
I got it used a while back, not even sure who makes it.
The old girl through me a curve ball. I dug her to get ready for the track and saw that I have a leaky fork seal. I've got the forks apart and have to head to the local stealership in the AM and hope they've got some seals for me or I'm screwed for Thursday.
