: 750 rear seat cowl question

so I have been browsing this site and come across a good few pics of peoples bikes in their posts, who have rear seal cowls.
I've notice that everyones seem to fit so friggin' nicely, whereas mine fits like absolute crap. :scratch
It's wider than the rear side covers by about 2mm each side at the very front of it, which causes the entire 'line' of the cowl to not sit nicely in line with the rear side covers. I thought maybe these weren't attached properly but I have looked at microfiche and I have all bolts, washers, rubbers etc where they are supposed to be so I can only deduct that the original suzuki cowls are absolute crap?
When I can get a good days weather here I'll take some pics to post.

looking at carslut's pics in this post (http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92825), it lines up incredibly nicely but overlaps the riders seat and has a different pad to mine so I'm assuming its not an original part?

Does anyone have an experience with this, or know of some decent aftermarket ones that actually fit and follow the lines as nicely as the one above?

Many thanks!

Yours sounds like mine, I've got a pyramid one and the fit aint as good as it could be, coz its made of fibreglass - the original suzi ones are proper plastic and do the job nicely, but rare as hell....

how is yours attached? maybe yours is not a factory suzuki part like mine and most others on here. carsluts is not a factory suzuki cowl. here are a couple pics of mine. mine has a gap at the front because the front part of the fairing is not bolted down, just hanging. notice the indention on top of the cowl. does yours have that?

that one has definitely tasted the ground a couple times.

Danny, mine's identical to that. It's moulded plastic, has the bolt on black under side, has original suzuki part numbers on the main part in view when black part is unscrewed, push in pad on the front etc etc. it just fits like crap. I'll take pics now the rain's dissapeared a bit!

Sorry if they're not very clear.. it's hard to catpure just what I mean, I think they do the trick though!
You can see in the 2nd one how the cowl overlaps the side fairing and it's the same on both sides. In the first pic you can see the way it does not sit flush with the side fairings.. again, the same on both sides, though one is worse than the other!

i have never seen a grab bar on a 750 bike before. only thing i can think of, is that there are some rubber bushings missing that go between the plastic and its mounting points, that would spread the plastics wider.

o ya, we want pics of the rest of the bike too ;)

Thing is, where the sides bolt to the sub frame just under the front of the cowl, I have the proper rubber, metal spacer tube, washer and bolt on each side, so I can only deduct that the cowl itself is too wide, and a piece of shit :D
I may be wrong but even if the rubbers had shrunk over time with age, the metal tubes inside them won't have.
I did have the same thought myself, so i put some washers (3 per side) inbetween fairing and sub frame, and ok that levelled the widths out, but the cowl still stuck out and wasn't flush with the 'line' it follows as it goes towards the back.

As for the grab bar, I put 1993 fairing on the rear as it had pre-cut holes for a pillion handle on each side, and bought a pair of handles on ebay. They were a regular thing over here in the UK, 750's with uncut plastics and no handles were the 94 and 95 models, and even they had some the majority of the time. I wanted the handles for my girlfriend as she's a regular pillion and my rear plastics had slight damage anyway so I wanted to replace them.

Thanks for the replies by the way, everyone. Much appreciated!

Side note: pics as requested.. bare in mind it's very much a work in progress :P

yeah, if there's one thing I like about being in the UK, its having little things like that switch.. and being able to turn my lights off which apparently you can't do in the states?
Rear rotor is identical pattern cut as front.. matching sets are the way to go ;)

You have no idea how annoying it is to be me with this rear cowl :cursing
You have a good idea of trying it on someone elses bike though.. now to find someone.. hmm.
i WOULD send you it.. I just don't trust US customs not to beat the living shit out of packages! haha.

As for matching paint on the rear, I can just switch plastics to do that :biggrin
Although that would mean having some that has minor damage issues which while they look pretty, I know aren't 100% and so am not happy with.

I've also changed the front fender since that pic: pictured is a repaired fibreglass one that is slightly twisted and so ended up in the shed in favour of an OEM item from germany in red.
The main front plastics and headlight need replacing too as they're damage repaired too, and pretty badly at that. Oh and I also need the plastic side covers that attach to the side fairing tops and inside the 'cockpit' left and right.. just incase anyone has any of that lot they're willing to sell? :D

Basically I bought this bike as a project and was intending to streetfighter it but had a change of heart and intend on making it a nice mint condition, personalised example of what it was supposed to be..

Then it's a case of finding a colour I like and spraying it all to look pretty. black's a 'no' as it shows scratches too easy and I can't find a way of getting it to look flawless when polishing.. I'm thinking suzuki sonic silver a la my bandit 600 which is gorgeous when the sun hits it, or an urban camo scheme. Maybe even a deep pearl white.. not sure yet. Ideas are welcome! (hint)

Anyway, excuse the ramble. I'm sure many of you are thinking: :sleep If any of you do need anything from the UK, I'm always willing to help if possible :cheers

Danny - from what I've found out, many suzuki switch sets fit the gsxr handle bar sizes no problem, I'm not sure about the connectors though.. not a problem if you have existing ones to swap with. Just a case of finding nice ones. You might also need the throttle barrel, depending which bike you get switches from. I'm after a bandit set at the right price, originals are too square for my liking and pass switch is real sharp on my finger.

Pushur - are you having a laugh? you already have a cowl.. in place of a rear seat? I'll trade yours for mine if you like!
