: Steering while up on one????
spdgsxr750 07-05-2006, 08:12 AM I just wanted to start a thread to see what seems to work the best as far as directing the bike while performing a wheelie. I stand up w/ both feet on the front clip-ons and have been attempting to 'steer' the bike by applying additional pressure on either the right or left side, depending which way I'd like to go. The bike begins to go in that direction; but most of the time I experience a little headshake and end up putting the front tire down before it gets out of control. I always pull the bike up on a staight away, usually in 3rd gear at about 70mph, but now that I can ride them between a mile or two, as long as the highway/road remains straight, I'd like to be able to ride a slight curve. The wind can also have an influence in the direction the bike travels while the front end is up so to be able to countersteer is a necessity to travel straight. Thanks in advance for your input and be safe.
gimpsta 07-05-2006, 02:50 PM u start learning by trying to come up on your tip toes of the foot to the direction you want to go.
if you try and lean, u'll push with your opposite foot and make the bike all out of wack
oh, and you dont' wheelie on the clip ons.
I'd try to get the terminology down before doing anything else for fear of you trying stupid b/c u didn't exactly understand it.
csimp3 07-05-2006, 03:33 PM i think you meant rearsets, not clip ons, also you get some wobble, but no headshake, due to the front wheel being off the ground, anyhow, i get the same wobbles from time to time, bald or really low tires make the wobble worse, i think sometimes in wheelie you can accelerate out of a wobble, also, when im steering my wheelies, like switching lanes and such, i do like you said and put weight on that peg, but i also, lean my body into it, putting your body weight into it will help you switch lanes or steer faster, hope this helps a little

what sprocket sizes do you have? (front and back)
spdgsxr750 07-06-2006, 09:02 AM I am still running the Stock Sprockets, I was considering going -1 in the front to pull up the front easier, but I realized it wasn't necessary and further that I wasn't using the correct technique to pull it up. I just power it up around 45 mph in second gear or 70mph in third gear. I get to the desired speed/rpm range, stand up, off the throttle, back on the throttle, front comes up, and it's just throttle control and balance from there. None of my buddies have tank cams so hopefully I'll be able to get my bro to film me so I can post the vid.
Blue-by-U 07-06-2006, 01:03 PM Man, a wheelie while standing on the clipons??? I GOT TO SEE THIS :eek
spdgsxr750 07-06-2006, 01:45 PM I shouldn't have attempted to use terminology that I am unfamiliar w/. This whole 'clip-on' thing, which I admittingly did miss-quote, was an attempt to give the rearsets/rider pegs a cool ring. Anyway, I posted this thread to get some input as to how to steer the bike while performing a wheelie, so no more 'clip-on' talk...ah-ight!

Hopefully your using some brake in 3rd. If not learn that brake and do them in 2nd gear. I had problems steering for months. What i figured out is you gotta get it HIGH, higher then normal (which is why your rear brake helps) then keep pressure on the foot, in the direction, you want to go. Mind you, you can do it without the brake but its a lot easier to bring her back so your almost slowing her down which makes steering 10 TIMES easier. If you dont believe me (not to be rude) then you have no idea. Im talking about being able to steer in traffic from lane to lane using blinkers with much control. If your in 3rd, then im guessing your increasing speed little by little. Get em higher but use the rear brake to slow em down a little and steering will be much easier. 2cents:cheers
