hey guys, k7 gsxr 600 here. 13k miles. basically Im having a really difficult time shifting gears after taking my front sprocket cover off, cleaning gunk, cleaning and lubing chain, changing rear tire. before doing all shifting was perfectly fine. Ive done some research and cant seem to find any case like mine.
Some things ive noticed:
-start in neutral, turn engine on and let idle, can shift to first, but then cant shift back to neutral, only between one and two, going up to two takes way too much strength, and then cant go to anything past two
-occasionally, ill be able to go past two if i use my hands and to shift pedal up but ill still have a problem finding neutral
Things im going to do tomorrow:
-check chain tension, make sure there is appropriate slack
-check oil make sure there is enough, i use rotella 10wd40
-make a clutch adjustment on the engine side? <-i really dont wanna fuck with that because i didnt touch that side so it cant be the problem
Just wanted to know if people have any remedies, any suggestions for what i can do? any tests i can run on the transmission or clutch to make sure its engaging and disengaging properly. im not tech savy so no big words please:grin2: Ill be following this thread closely. Thanks in advance!
Yes I did, that was actually my first problem and that caused me to lose all tension in clutch lever, after some research I fixed that thanks to the advice of @Moto_Joe on another thread
Oh god that might make sense, but then that would also mean my gear indicator sensor is not working correctly, how would I go about reversing the shift order
It should show whether there's something wrong with your gearbox, or whether perhaps it's a matter of the clutch not disengaging completely. Post a picture of your gear shift linkage. If your gear indicator shows you're in 1st or 2nd, you should be in 1st or 2nd. You've probably just put together the linkage in such a way, that it can't operate the shift shaft properly.
Ok I just did the test, yeah with engine off I can go through all the gears easily, then u put it in neutral, and turned engine on, I could switch to one but couldnt shift up or down. Used my hands was able to shift up to 2 but then cldnt go up to 3 even with hands
I first thought it was your shift linkage and you accidentally made your bike GP shift, "losing" neutral and really being in between 5th and 6th and not being able to upshift to 3rd, cause you're GP and in 6th.
That's normal if I understand you right. You'd have to let the clutch out and then squeeze it again to go up more gears. The gears won't move and the dogs just won't engage.
You ever have trouble putting your bike back in first?
HOLD clutch in, put bike in first, put bike in neutral, now bike won't go in first again. You have to let the clutch out and then squeeze it again to get into first the second time.
My 2c, unless I'm completely off and I don't get your problem. :burnout
Bumpity bump any1 got any other ideas, I know it's something small and stupid that I'm not doing right and I bet it's with the shift linkage and I've reinstalled it many times
No I understand perfectly, I have no problem shifting to first, but sometimes I cant get to first when I get up to second. It also doea alot of clunking and clanking when i do change gears. Could too much oil be causing this problem? I did some research and I saw that too much oil can cause shifting problems and tranny problems. My window is like covered in oil when it's upright. Regardless Ima drain it a bit
So if you put the bike in neutral, start the bike, pull in the clutch, click into first, and start to take off it stalls? Can you take the sprocket cover off and post a pic please?
Alright guys, I took some oil out and a bunch of metal filaments came out too. Gear shifting is working much better now, it seems like there was much too oil in it. Thanks every1 for your help I'll let you know if there's any more problems
How can I fix metal in the oil? How bad is this. Also new prob can't hit neutral when the engine is on it fucken pisses me off. I feel it stop at neutral for like half a sec and then it slides right over to 1 or 2. When I turn the engine off it has no problem hitting neutral.
Well not a whole lot that "you" can do...I am guessing.
As you didn't get that metal was a red flag for really bad.....Something inside of your gears/shift forks/clutch,or all of the above could now be fucked....The more you run it,the more damage you are doing.....At this point.....I bet it's cheaper /easier to start pricing some engines......Rebuilds get pricey quick especially since you probably wouldn't be doing this yourself.
Sucks to hear............Got any mechanic friends...who like beer?
