girl down...my gear saved my life.
Well everyone said it would happen and unfortunately it did...I went down...hard. I was merging onto the freeway, the guy in left lane I was trying to merge into gave me to ok to get in front of him. I was all clear in front, then a guy in white SUV cut through 2 lanes, gets right in front of me and slams on his brakes. To avoid ending up in the trunk of his SUV, I had no choice but to dump the bike to the right onto the shoulder and out of oncoming traffic. Luckily I was only in second going about 35mph and I had all my gear on which saved a lot of skin from road rash. I was wearing a textile Joe Rocket Atomic 4.0 jacket, Icon gloves and helmet, and my leather knee high boots I got at DSW. The jacket saved my back and arms because when I fell, I tumbled and slid a good 15 feet and I rolled onto my back because of the back plate in the jacket. I did get some road rash on my stomach when I initially hit the pavement but nothing major, just really uncomfortable and itchy now as it heals. The jacket has a small hole in the arm but it's still wearable and you can barely tell anything happened. My gloves held up ok, but I was trying to stop myself from sliding into traffic so they got tore up, I needed new ones anyway. Remarkably, my helmet wasn't scratched at all but my ChatterBox broke off the side and I'm missing the clip but it still works! When I fell off the bike, my right knee hit the foot peg and created a rather large hole so I was forced by the EMTs and my boyfriend to go to the hospital. I had to get 12 stitches in it the right and 5 stitches in the left.
It was such a surreal experience, because I remember everything and I still can't believe it happened. I'm lucky I was fully geared up and my bike didn't slide into traffic causing more of an accident. I'm just dealing with the aches and pains of healing now.
My poor bike needs some work because when the guy cut me off and I fell, my bike got lodged under his bumper and he dragged it almost 100 yards, and the no, the guy never stopped which is crazy to me. Since the guy that was initially letting me merge saw the whole thing he stopped to help and gave the police his statement. The police classified it as a hit and run, so there's really nothing I can do. I know I want to ride again, but I'm still a little shaken up by it and I haven't even gone to look at my bike in the garage because I'm afraid I might breakdown. From what my boyfriend said, the frame sliders did their job and saved a lot of the bike but I do need new front fairings (right and left), right foot pegs, a crankcase cover and frame sliders. My bike is all black so I'm hoping it wont be that difficult to find some used fairings. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get aftermarket parts? I'm not going to make an insurance claim because my deductible is $1k and it should cost less to fix.
Thanks and ride safe,
