How to set up a bike for Track Days

Hi, new to the forum. Just bought a used 2012 GSX-R600 L2. What's a L2?

I plan to use the bike 30% street and 70% track. Can anyone point me in the correct direction for preparing the bike. i.e. how to remove mirrors, disable lights and horn, etc.?

Also recommendation on some after market items like frame sliders, exhausts, etc.

Thanks in advance and sorry if these posts already exist. I just don't want to search 50 posts to find the info.

L2 = 2012. Not sure why it's "L" and not "X" but maybe somebody else will chime in on that.

Unbolt the mirrors - pretty straight forward.

Pull the fuses for the lights/horn and/or disconnect them from the harness.

2001-2009 = K model years.

2010+ = L model years

You only have to read one thread, it's a sticky that contains all the info you would need.

Why would it be a X? Think of it this way...a 2005 is a K5..2009 is a K9..etc..... so..2012... What letter comes after K? That is right..... L.

Well, because K tends to indicate 000 (i.e. thousands). As far as "X" it's the roman numeral for 10, so X2 would be 10+2 which I could understand shorthand for 12.

But by that logic you could also call it XII .

I see k5 as shorthand for 2k5 or 2005, so I wouldn't make the logical jump to go from "k" indicating thousands to "L" which, while is alphabetically next, doesn't have a numerical representation that I am aware of beyond 12 (being the 12th letter of the alphabet). So if L were to be 12 then L2 would be, what, 14? .

Re: How to set up a bike for Track Days

You are overthinking it..... We aren't doing roman numerals... And it is not a 2K5..it is only a K5.. Hell..that is only 1 character shorter... Whats the point? Think of the K taking the place of the first 3 digits..the 200...and L takes place of 201...etc...

I do that a lot, overthinking that is. About the only time I don't over-think is when I'm drunk and I've all but given up drinking.

Why is a 2000 Y then?

Because Suzuki ran out of letters...so they came up with a new plan for designations..But I think it is safe to say that they decided to stick with this pattern until they get to Y9..

Because up until then everything was a single letter. Assuming you are correct that a 2000 was a Y
1999 was an X
1998 was a w
1997 was a V

It indicated the 10th digit of the VIN, which showed the year of the bike.

When the y2k bikes came out, to avoid confusion they started designating them as K1, K2, K3 all the way to K9. in 2010 they would have either had to add another number to the vin sequence, or just do as the did and go to L1, L2, L3

As to the OPs other questions search

You dont need anything special to prep the bike for a trackday.

check your track rules and trackday organization's rules. they should be on the website. some orgs require water wetter, taping mirrors and lights and a wired sidestand. some orgs require nothing. how the hell did you get a USED L2? someone just bought a bike in order to sell or something?!

I thought so, but appears not. Now the letter is simply an internal suzuki model designation it seems. Used to follow suit that the model was also the letter that designated the year in the vin. Now that "letter" is simply a number.

The release is farther down the wires. It is there. Sometimes it is sort of stuck behind the fairing stay and windscreen and all
