I went and got my bike inspected today. My rear brake pads were too worn to pass. I already have a full set front and rear on the way to re-check.
Anyway, I have had my bikes inspected at the same location for over 10 years by the same fella. When I called to set up for this bike, the shop told me my guy was no longer there and referred me to another place.
The new place did the inspection which took almost an hour. At the end the inspector slapped on a german helmet and proceeded to ride off on my bike for around 10-15 min.
Have I been living a sheltered life when it comes to my inspections? I have never heard anyone else I know say the inspector took a ride on their bike during one. I am not upset or anything and maybe it helped him to decide on my brakes but I thought it was just odd.
That's the first time I've ever heard of that happening . Think I would have stopped him to make sure that if anything happen he or the owner of the shop were going to take on the liability if he had an accident or damaged the bike while riding it .:surprise:
When I moved to NJ I thought my buddies were fucking with me when they said bikes aren't inspected. Then I come to find out that my car only needs inspection every 4 years and it's free! It's about the only positive thing about living in NJ.
The thought did cross my mind. When I realized he was going to ride it I thought he was just going around the lot. Until he turned out on to the street. I was a bit jittery when I heard him hitting up to third pretty firmly and fading away after that.
In Md it's a one time inspection after purchase if it's a private sale. If you buy from dealer it's already done usually. I was taken aback because my best friend had nothing but praise for this place and I was not expecting this at all.
Every inspection for the 8 previous bikes had been walk arounds but again, same guy for years until today.
I live in PA and the guy I go to does a walk around of the bike in his lot and checks the basics:
- All lights and indicators working
- Condition of tires
- Brakes - squeezes lever and quick look at front pads
- Fork seals - no oil residue on stanchions
Watching him ride off I was also thinking the novelty helmet he was wearing isn't even legal here and we weren't that far from a county sub station. I was like ok then...
yeh they do that here.
and no you cant tell if a bike meets standards simply by riding around a parking lot. unless the standards are low.
down here, its part of a RWC, bike has to be test ridden legally, usually its just around the block, somewhere up to 50kmh and then back to the shop, i don't really mind a workshop riding my bike, so long as they cover any damages (which legally they have to in australia) and they're not being a fucktarded wanker on it. i only go to a workshop i trust, no one else.
I recently watched some videos about riders down your way. I will say we have much lower standards and our regulations aren't as hardcore. I suppose that can be good or bad depending on ones opinion.
In NJ they used to do just a quick walk around inspection where they'd literally check if your head and tail lights work, your blinkers and your horn, and make sure your helmet (helmets are mandatory in NJ obviously) has a certain amount of reflective surface on the back of it....that's it nothing more. And like I said, they did away with bike inspections entirely now.
Shit even with car inspections, you get out and they literally step on the gas to get the car up to like 10-15 mph and hit the brakes as they ride it over some contraption that I guess measures something and that's it. I guess no harm no foul the guy didn't crash your bike on his test[joy] ride, but if I were you I'd look into MD's inspection protocols (they should be detailed online somewhere) and see if what that guy did is part of the normal process or not. If not I'd go back there and give him a bit of an earful.
It's interesting to hear how different each state/country can be with this. Mostly it's the back and forth between inspection, repairs, inspection then MVA finally for the sticker that really annoys me. The system here almost punishes you with time consuming things to get plates ect. I am sure it contributes to the large amount of riders with no tags at all in this area.
The last bike I inspected was about four years back before this one. I vaguely remember watching the guy checking off stuff and maybe I am getting old and senile but I sort of remember seeing fewer columns on his clipboard then what's on that list . I wonder if MD made their bike checklist a bit more comprehensive. It wouldn't surprise me,this state loves trying to micro-manage everyone with new regs.
He probably just thought he'd like a ride and sounds like a pisstaker, but if it's the "rules" I guess he entitled to do so
There's no way he would be taking my bike out, I'd rather hit another bike shop who didn't do it frankly, especially when you hear him winding up in third gear in the distance lol......
Certainly exceeding the 20mph test ride in third gear
I would stick a camera on it, visibly display a sticker on the bike that states something to the degree that there is a camera on it and riding it is giving consent to being filmed, then watch it.
State of MD requires a test ride, to make sure that the bike is you know, SAFE to operate. What a concept. Inspector is licensed, shop is insured and takes liability if anything were to happen. Whats the problem?
Well, after 10 years of never seeing a guy hop on my bike and ride away during an inspection it struck me as odd mostly. It seems the inspections have gotten a bit tougher and now include the ride part.
