I wasn't saying you can't, don't get me wrong. I was just saying it partially a mental thing for me.

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

One of the guys I go to track days with had a pilot road II rear tire and thought it was a pilot power or one tire. The front was the right one but the rear was a sport touring. He had no idea and was runnning good intermediate pace at the time.

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked! I live about 10 miles from the gate, I'll be riding home for lunch

Last TD I did they had A, B, C, and D groups and I was running mid pack in B group by the end of the weekend. I'll definitely be starting in C group though. I don't want to jump into the deep end and get massacred

The only things that will carry over is that you will know which direction the track goes and where to enter/exit the track from/into Hot Pit Lane.

Nothing from the car will translate into motorcycle skills/speed. Lines are different, shift points are different, angles are different, etc. Not to mention things like body positioning, braking techniques etc.

The only advantage you will have over the guys who have never done a track day is that you will know the procedure for getting through the front gate and into the paddock.

I would definitely sign up in the beginner group.

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

I've only ridden at Miller Motorsports Park. Not really any tracks close to hear and that is the closest one. about 6 hours away
But I'm moving to Austin TX next week and there are lots of tracks within a close drive, so i'm really looking forward to that.

Friend on mine also has a Triumph 700 running dual-purpose tires and clowns on us every time; knee down with ease.

Yep, good ST tires like the 023s are more than enough for Novice Group

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

I've run on track with the BT-021 ST tyre a few times and it was fine.

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

it will be fine. i wouldn't get to technical with tires till you start pulling about 1st place pace on intermediate group.

no problem for a first time track rider. just make sure the tires are not 10 years old and full of dry rot. you will be slow as balls your first time out, just like everyone else on their first track day. but, as your pace increases, so will your interest in street/track tires. eventually, you'll work up to full DOT race tires and warmers if you do this long enough. it's pretty addicting.

good luck!

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

Yes, sport touring tires will be fine. Especially if its your first time on track. Most often times when tire manufacturers have press reveal for their new tires (including sport touring tires) they include both an on road and race track test for the journalists like these Dunlop Roadsmart IIs

Sweet! Nope, no dry rot and they are only a couple months old. They do have about 5k miles on em though. At least.

Re: Track day on sport touring tires?

More than enough tire for your first trackday. You shouldn't be going 100% anyway. Work on your body position, lines, braking points, ect. Just the fundamentals. Don't worry about speed or getting passed. The speed will come naturally when you start doing everything right. The newbs who go down are usually the ones who are amped up.
