Red face Can't open gas tank?

Hey,

Yup, I know it sounds really silly. But I was at a gas station today to fill up, I stick the key in the socket, but the key will only go about half way into the socket.

I tried to turn the key, with a little force, but it would not turn. Has anyone experienced this before? Any response is appreciated.

Thank you,
Dean S.

Re: Can't open gas tank?

Try a little WD in the hole. Also make sure your key hasnt been bent of twisted, just a little can cause that.

dont use wd40 that makes the tumblers stick

use graphite and or try blowing it out with some compressed air. probably just a tumbler caught up

Yeah I haven't had much experience with motorcycle locks sticking although I can see it being straight up and down and water getting in after being washed and all. I do know we have a fleet of crown vics and have to spray wd in the locks about once a year because the keys wont go all the way in and turn the lock and it always works.

Turk

I tried to push it down, but it won't go down. Something is stuck. I forced it a little and I don't want the key to bend.

push the gas cap inwards and try to open it...mine got stuck and i had to almost pry it open but after spraying it with lube 40 (same thing as wd40 i believe) its now workin fine.

Shoot some compressed air in there that may blow some dirt/objects out

Dont use WD 40!

+1

WD - 40 May make things slip but only for a short time and it attracts Dirt and dust. Cause it will stick to the wd - 40 as it drys

Cool Re: Can't open gas tank?

In my expierance water/moisture/weathering got into the mechanism and probaly Seized it in one piece just like my k5 1K was left outside for a year and ended up bending the key cus it wud only go halfway, i had to pry out switch from tank , i then took off both of the Cross screws after i relized that the lock/unlock Lever that moves was Rusted and conjoined in one piece to the base i new something was wrong cus of all the rust, after remiving those screws i saw the housing with the spring nd it was all jammed cus of the corrosion i them took off the second mechanism flat round cover and yup more corrison and water residue which was alot, after having the 3 pieces i poured a shitload of wd-40 and Brushed everything clean which included grinding all parts with water residue more wd-40 and put all together and Now turns like Butter

All the white in the pic is water residue and rust
