Replace Fork Bottom Only?

Stock 06 forks, somebody cranked the axle pinch bolts down and the clamp cracked clean through right across. Is it possible for just the cast lower part to be replaced or do I need the whole assembly with the tube?

Disclaimer: A professional shop will be doing this, so assume all the right tools. Just need to know what parts to supply.

Re: Replace Fork Bottom Only?

The front fork is only sold as an assembly. Per this the tube screws into the casting. So it's possible to separate them - search here but I seem to recall that heat is required, possibly due to a thread sealant. So if you could find a fork with a damaged tube, you ought to be able to combine it with yours to make a complete assembly. Run through the K5/K6 1000 pics here to get an idea of what's available. Unfortunately the one above has a broken fender mounting leg and is a right, while you may need a left.

The pinch bolts are only supposed to be tightened to 16.5 ft-lb. A broken casting sounds like a lot more was applied. I've mentioned here before that the Vesra racing team only runs one bolt on their forks, leaving the second hole empty. I'm surprised but I don't think that they've killed anybody - yet.

Re: Replace Fork Bottom Only?

Thanks Bill. That't about what I thought. I do in fact need a right side one. Whoever owned the bike before me didn't own a torque wrench because I've found all sorts of things that were just plain gorilla tight for no reason.

Re: Replace Fork Bottom Only?

Why not just replace the whole inner tube complete ?

1/2 curiosity, 1/2 cost reasons.

Well, a replacement is cheaper, and I don't think your safety is worth the curiosity.
