AAAARRRRGHHHH someone talk me out of this!!!

I'm shopping for a car right now. Trying to be reasonable / conservative. My idea of a 'hot' car is a 2013/14 fully loaded, EX-L V6 Honda Accord Coupe

My buddy just bought 'another' Porsche and needs to thin-out his inventory. For years, he's known I'm absolutely in awe / love with his CTS-V so he's offering it to me for $10K under it's actual value. He's upgraded the supercharger, suspension, rims and exhaust with a custom map. It's a fucking monster of a car. It went from the stock, paltry 540 hp to 630 and when you're cruising down the highway on cruise control, it's so quiet / smooth, you'd swear you're in a Camry. (it is a cadillac, after all)

It outruns literbikes - just stomp the gas for pant-shitting acceleration. He often has bikes pull up beside him on the highway and it's no contest. The higher the starting speed, the bigger the gap. It would take bikes like OG's turbo busa's to outrun this car.

And it's beyond OCD immaculate / mint.

pic from interwebz. I can't show you a pic of the actual car because it's still in winter storage. He wouldn't even take me for a ride in the new Porsche yesterday because the roads were wet He spends more time detailing / upgrading cars than actually driving them, it seems.

So I tell him that even at $10K under market value, it's out of my desired price range. He told me to give him the $$$ I'm about to spend on a used Accord and pay the difference 'whenever'. He doesn't care. I actually DO understand his reasoning: Not only is he an awesome guy but he also loves it. He'd be happier if it went to someone he knows, who will also love it, and who is also a bonafide OCD detailing freak like him. IE it's going to the best-case home.

I got an insurance quote and it's reasonable. The gas mileage will obviously be more than I'm used to but.... ARRRRRGHHHH it's all I can think about!!!!!

Background: Anyone who has paid attention to my ramblings over the years, specifically about big, fast cars, may recall my mentioning a buddy of mine whose toy budget makes me want to kill him / myself.

Furthermore, he's always had a seriously gracious 'my garage is your garage' policy so there was an entire decade when I didn't even need to actually 'own' a bike, since I could go for weekend rides on whatever his current literbike was.... which he traded-up/in.... sometimes twice a year to have the latest & greatest Pretty awesome dude (he never was much of an active member but he's gdc member @buzzertoy )

In the long list of toys he's had, including Porches, not one but TWO M5s and many others (including a T-Rex, which I got to take my daughter for a blast in!), the only car of his I've actually doted-on is the CTS-V. It's fucking scary-fast, gorgeous and unless things have changed, it's the fastest sedan to ever go around the nurburgring. Faster than the M5, even. (due to electro-magnetic suspension trickery, among other things)

Re: AAAARRRRGHHHH someone talk me out of this!!!

Your Accord is going to depreciate faster than this CTS-V, because they are still desirable, and the only downside is that you're going to consume a lot of gas. Depending on what he wants, I would definitely buy this. There is nothing quite like having a DD with plenty of power. You don't have to drive like a dumbass, but being able to outrun 99.9% of cars while shifting at 4K is entertaining.

Re: AAAARRRRGHHHH someone talk me out of this!!!

Even if I got a clean L3-4 Accord coupe, I'm such a detailing freak that I'd store it winters anyway, meaning that I'm buying a winter pile regardless.

I guess I'll just buy a slightly nicer pile to use as a 'mileage dump' for shopping and other such drudgery (minimize parking lot exposure to door dings).

I've never owned a really awesome car before. Yeah.... I'm thinking fuck it. You only live once

Re: AAAARRRRGHHHH someone talk me out of this!!!

You betcha'
And I hope a big bike pulls up beside me when I have a passenger (to record a quick video) to show what happens when you stomp the gas. The supercharger whine is awesome too.

My daughter is going to roll her eyes big time, like when I bought my last penis extension ('76 stingray) EDIT: also from the same guy

Hey, I'm soon turning 50. I overdue for my mid life crisis anyway.

Yeah, I just did a 1 and 2 year TCOO* projection and this will end-up being like the vette. I had fun in that thing and 2 years later, sold it for almost 50% more than I paid, which meant that insurance, storage and maintenance were free. This Cadillac won't be 50% but if I list it an a couple of years, they don't stay for sale long. I won't come-out 'ahead' but it won't actually "cost" much to own this car, thanks to my good friend. If I end-up making a profit, I'll split it with him... not that he'll take it but I'll at least offer.

Re: AAAARRRRGHHHH someone talk me out of this!!!

I have this purdy little thing to thank for my upcoming car purchase. Looks pretty awesome with the matte white vinyl wrap. I think I'll be doing that to my Cadillac as well (I love saying that - 'my' Cadillac )

He doesn't even smoke but he ditched everyone to accompany me to the garage for my smoke breaks so he could spend a few minutes wiping down these $1500 (each!) rims

It has a custom sound system but we spent an hour TRYING to make sense of the Alpine head unit's parametric EQ to get those 10s to actually thump.

And I got to make fun of him for refusing to drive it in the rain. Downtown yesterday, I heard the unmistakable sound of an Italian 12 and turned around so see this Aventador enjoying a nice shower

It’s about me being a smoker, when in other threads, some things I’ve said make me sound like a health / fitness nut. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. I’m a ravenous glutton who also drinks shocking amounts of beer every day and has been a smoker since my teens. I do what some might think is a fanatical amount of exercise out of NECESSITY.

Todd, I believe I read in another thread that you’re an MD so you’ll understand. I’m stuck in a medical loop of cause and effect.
I used to let myself pork-up in the winters because I can drop 25-30 lbs like nothing once I start hitting the bike paths in spring. However, one winter when I weighed 217lbs, I was on a long walk and felt a weird little pain on my right shin. I thought ‘don’t be a pussy and walk through it’. Disastrous decision. Within another 3-4 KMs, I was in agony because I had experienced a shin splint without knowing what it was and kept walking. It took almost 2 painful months before I could walk normally again. I really fucked myself up.
My doctor said…. And I quote “You’re a fat man with shin splints and you’ll never walk 10kms again”. It was VERY hard to lose those pounds while injured. Something I’d rather not go through again.

So ever since then, since I can’t seem to control my eating and drinking, I walk* and cycle like a maniac. I CAN’T pork-up because then I’ll aggravate the splint, meaning it’ll be a snowball effect of obesity, shin…. meaning I won’t be able to walk at all and I’d be one of those morbidly obese people on a rascal scooter.

I even tried switching from beer to scotch last year (less calories) but having ‘control issues’, I didn’t like where that was going. So now I eat and drink (ONLY beer) ALL I want and have simply adjusted my lifestyle to allow it. Tons of exercise, every day.

The bonus: When I’m coming out of the metro and there are 4-5 stories of escalators, I’ll sometimes instead opt to trot-up the stairs 2 at a time, get to the top and I’m not even out of breath. Same for biking. I’m faster than 95% of people on the bike path and at my peak pace (32-35 kph), I’m sweating like a bastard but never even close to out of breath. I pull over (for a smoke break ) and check my pulse sometimes and I’m hardly ever over 115.

I’d rather be a 50 year old chronic over-eating, beer drinking smoker with my ‘healthy compensation' routine than not have that routine. I'm at 180lbs, fit into size 32s like I did when I was 18 and look pretty decent for an old fart.

* and I'm also very conscious of treating shoes like tires, since they lose their springiness with mileage and that's one of the main aggravating factors with shin splints. Once they're at the 500km mark, I toss 'em, even if they still look OK

Indeed. What an awesome guy / friend.

It's going to be a loooong 2 weeks before my bonus comes in (the reason I was going to spoil myself a little with a used Accord) and I can actually bring it home. I've been googling and.....

This one's a stick. Mines an automatic but same thing

I prefer the auto. 6L80 and 6L85 are good transmissions that are years ahead of the shit like the 4L60 and other transmissions that are abysmal to drive.
