Hello all I need some help. I have an 03 gsx-r 600 Alstare now the problem I am having trouble shooting is that when I'm driving down the highway/road I hear a whining in the front of the motor like if you would put your ear down by the handle bars but it doesn't do it when just sitting there idleing or at stop sign or doesn't do it when I pull in the clutch either. Can anyone give me some ideas? Clutch?, tranny?, maybe it's nothing at all just wondering.
You'll have to be more specific about the noise, if you're hoping to troubleshoot it. For instance, does the pitch follow engine speed? Does the loudness depend on throttle opening? Do you hear it at a specific rpm band or anywhere above idle? Can you hear the noise when revving the motor in neutral (no need to redline it)? In that case, can you pinpoint where it might be coming from?
One possibility migh be the cam chain. See this thread, particularly the first post for the symptoms I had.
It's doesn't change with engine speed or rpm. When the bike is idling it doesn't make the noise even with just revving it up. It starts making the noise when I'm going down the road. also while I'm on the highway if I pull the clutch in it stops.
A noise that goes away when pulling the clutch, would logically be related, either to the engine, or perhaps to the clutch itself. To tell what is the case, try shifting to neutral and releasing the clutch while it's making the noise. If the noise is still there, it's likely something in the clutch, otherwise it's before that. The rest of the transmission is turning whenever you're in gear, so the clutch shouldn't make any difference if the problem was there and I guess it should be ruled out. What I find puzzling, is that the noise isn't related to throttle opening or engine speed (which is another word for rpms) but still seems to be coming from the engine. Are you sure the pitch of the whine doesn't go up as you speed up?
Also, what's the rpm range, in which the whine's audible?
Yeah I agree with everything you said and that's why it's so puzzling to me too. I'm a mechanic I just don't work on bikes so I know a lot about motors but this has got me stumped. Maybe it's just me thinking there is something wrong but I don't remember hearing that noise before. It still has all its power and shifts just fine but I changed my oil last night and saw some silver metal shavings in the bottom of the pan. It seems like the noise starts as soon as I start moving but nothing when it's just idling or I rev it up without having it in gear. That's why I was thinking maybe a bearing in the tranny or something with the transmission
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
