Just picked up my first bike 98 gsxr srad 600 anyways anytime going from a stop in low rpm it seems like the bike is really jerky and if you give it a tiny bit of throttle it goes fine with the jerk but then like out of nowhere it speeds up almost like a turbo setup with lag. Seems to be insanely sensitive, intake filter is new, oil is new, spark plugs are new.
What did you ride before you picked up the SRAD? These bikes have very sensitive throttles, but it shouldn't go "just out of nowhere" when given "a tiny bit of throttle". Perhaps you're having trouble starting, either due to bad control input (say not slipping the clutch enough), or due to a mechanical problem (say a vacuum leak) and you compensate by more than "a tiny bit of throttle" which causes the unwanted acceleration, once engine speed has gone up a bit.
It is my first bike but im smart when it comes to powerful toys etc respect for the bike all the time, but few of my friends who have ridden for awhile say same thing it almost feels like herky jerky throttle.. I searched and saw threads on adjusting tps but that was for FI bikes and not carbed like mine. Could a dying battery cause it? as anytime i rev the bike the lights dim a light on gauge and also headlights do the same thing. Cheers
I know they have sensitive throttle but the throttle seems a bit excessive especially that low down in the rpm range! It may not be a starter bike to most and i dont mean to sound rude here! I know gear is the most important thing and also practice makes perfect.. Here in Canada bikes are so pricey and i got this one for 1000.00 canadian
You aren't rude, but bear in mind, that whether supersport class machines are starter bikes or not, meaning whether they're well suited for starting to ride, is most likely an objective matter; opinions may differ, but believing something doesn't make it so.
In any case, I asked about your prior riding experience, in order to establish whether the throttle behavior was more likely to be a result of a fault, or simply something you aren't accustomed to.
I don't know of any condition, that could cause the symptoms you describe on a carbutetted bike. Vacuum leaks and problems in the operation of vacuum slides might cause sudden acceleration with steady throttle, but it would still have to be a lot of throttle.
Engines are generally tuned to be as efficient as possible, so it's rather unlikely, that a fault would result in more power being generated. An exception would of course be a problem in the throttle system, including plates, cables and twist grip, so you should make sure it's operating smoothly.
Finally, jerks can create the illusion of strong acceleration, or lead to unwanted input, such as unwanted opening of the throttle. Make sure your chain slack is correct and that you're keeping a relaxed grip on the handle bars (which is one thing a sports bike won't make easy for you).
Well there is some merit to respect on bike or car.. i have a forest sti import with plenty of power and if i didnt respect the power id get into a lot of trouble have had the car for 5 years no issue. But i get where you are coming from ive been riding the bike now for 3 weeks without issue and im comfortable on it. Im just here to figure the issues out on the bike and not discuss my bike choices no offence and yes i did read the thread.
That behind us now, Yea im always relaxed on the grips but like i said even my buddy who has been riding for 8 years said same thing as me as under 5k rpm its really jerky once you get up in rpm range it goes away. Would clutch maybe need adjusting or throttle need adjusting? the bike sat for a year and was on its kickstand when it got tipped over once before by a car pushing it over.
So if I respect a burglar, he won't come into my house and steal my shit? :lmao Whatever...
My Victory is jerky in low RPMs as well as my 600 was until I had the ECU flashed. But if you had experience in two wheels you wouldn't be asking about this. If it is such an issue, just feather the clutch. Or, take it to a reputable ship and have a pro look at it instead.
its good that new user signs up on this site and you guys keep bringing up stuff that has nothing to do with the issue.. anyways figured issue out it was a coil pack causing the jerking.
Just fyi my forester isnt stock so laughing about it doesnt help you.. Its built with a protune and runs quicker than 13 seconds but thats neither here nor there. But issue is resolved now so can move on
Ha! I was just about to say the same. Lubing throttle cables is easy and wouldn't hurt either way - it's an OLD bike now...
I hear you about the jerkiness though - I have a FI 750 ('98) and in low gears the throttle opens in a very unfriendly way even with a fuel management module. On the road it's not so much of an issue and can be moderated by using the clutch, but on the track opening up in the corners is bloody scary. I am considering installing Healtech's aTRE (with GIpro) - if anyone has experience with those, plz let me know.
