*Edit* This thread is really meant to show the rebuilding of a factory bike. If you want to talk about doing trackdays, or anything else not related to this thread, please start another thread. If this thread becomes cluttered with posts about your dog, or magazine articles, or whatever else I will probably just give up. Hope you all understand. Thanks.
Well, I have a bit of downtime to finally start a thread about building a bitsa. In late 2010, I found this bike under a tarp at a local shop, worked a deal with the owner- who hadnt touched the bike in years- and brought it back to my shop.
This is a frame off rebuild. I have chosen to build a cool bike, using as many factory pieces as possible. However, I am not trying to make this a numbers matching works bike.
The day I picked it up, we ran it on the dyno, on 91 pump fuel, to see how it ran. Here is the chart:
And here are a few pics of the condition it was in, as received. While it ran really strong, it was in sorry shape as can be expected for a bike this old.
I like how you just "find" a works 150 hp srad under a tarp..... And I remember seeing a bike with the eyeball painted on the starter clutch cover before.....
Btw, even other than the giant length spot at 7800k on the a/f - trace, coming out of the hole at 7k, that is one very smooth and more importantly easy to use 150 hp, no spikes, just trails off..... Can I have it?
Piecing together a works factory racebike, with unobtaniun parts, that what the fuck it is.... Have some respect with your over the counter bolt ons.... That radiator cost more than your bike whn it was new.

Clearly, the bike heeded help. After poking around and calling some people who originally owned and raced this bike, I found the chassis was this bike. It was raced as a Formula USA bike, first by Mike Smith and then by Grant Lopez. When I get a bit of free time, I will post some pics of the dis-assembly.

All that power from a 750. My K2 1000 made 151HP after the power commander was fitted. Shows how much $$$$ and tech have gone into this engine....amazing!
^ Correct sir!
Armi, the battery box is the seat support as you noted above.
The Aus SBK SRAD's had the same set-up back in the day.
I copied one for my SBK rear cowl for the track (its no-where like the beauty that Sie produces though...).
The 750 bike was underquoted on paper in the power stakes, and 150hp (and remember that this isn't using the pressurised airbox to it's potential on a static dyno) wasn't unknown for the works motor; but from a dusty old tarp find... (yeah right)... awesome.
A bitza? Maybe, but all of the parts are all pretty tasty to me!
Yum Yum, I'm subscribed.
And expect a shed-load more pictures too!
Cheers, Ad
So that we understand where this is headed, here is a rough approximation of what I am looking to create. As an aside, I intend to ride this bike on the street occasionally, and take it to a few trackdays. It will also be used at trade shows and events.
Why not race it? Well, frankly it is too rare to risk it in a race environment. Even trackdays and street riding are not without risk, but racing takes that to another level. I have a few modern race bikes, that get used and abused, without much thought...
The Yosh bikes were sprint bikes.
It was not an endurance spec bike without lights. Note the starter is removed, etc.
The bike in this picture uses the ER0 swingarm, which was quick change. This was used at Daytona as well as the rest of the AMA schedule in 1996 which are all sprints.
In later years, they used the ER0 swingarm at Daytona, electing to use the XR0-style sprint swingarms at most other circuits. (If that is incorrect I am sure that Chris or someone else from Yosh will chime in and correct.)
Remember, this is 1996, so the obvious XR0 parts were not really developed yet- special dry clutch, pressure plate, subframe, etc...all came in later years.
I really hope this doesnt turn in to a XR0/ER0/whatever thread...
Ive subscribed to the thread because these bikes to me are very special. Spectrum Im very intrested in your project and the rebuild, the pic of the stem and the off set insert is really nice.
Your bike was the American bike and I would like this thread to be about your bike and not a comparison to what was raced in GB.
Q1 Does your swingarm have the quick realse and do you have a pic of that plz, also what size are the wheels.
Q2 You intending on doing any engine work.
I wonder if Simon sees the irony in posting that particular pic, while telling me what he knows and I dont. Oh well.
Also- I dont like calling people by their alias/screen name, but I dont know some of you so I will have to unless you introduce yourselves.
@Mike. Thanks.
@Chris. Thanks.
@Hamill- This really is a bitsa, with parts from the official US team as well as the support team, so it is mix and match.
I dont plan on doing any additional engine work, though frankly I dont know that there is much else to do.
The swingarm is quick change, but I dont have all of the QC gear yet. So, I made some spacers to use the kit Marchesini sprint wheels with the QC swingarm. As you know, people who have these parts are often reluctant to part with them in a timely manner and rather than wait years to get the correct parts, I would actually like to have a running bike- but Im odd like that.
When I got the bike, I picked up a few interesting wheels. In the pics, the rear is a PM Chicane 6.25 and the front is a 2000+ stocker. I have some PM Magnesium prototype 16.5's, but am not going to use them
The wheels I am going to use are 16.5 kit Marchesini, running the latest WSB slicks.

The pic of the Valvoline bike on the first page has them. Six thin spoke- they look like a newer Marvic or Galespeed. They had a very short service life unfortunately.

I'm working on a similar project. It's a street bike that came from Japan with a few interesting parts and I'm throwing a few more on it when I can either find them or make them. We should compare notes a little bit. I don't have any spares but if I have something you don't, maybe I could supply some pictures and information, so you could make what you need. And, vice-versa, of course.
Cheers,
JR
