Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Hello Everyone, I wanted to start a thread to show my build progress and document some of the conversion parts I will be doing from newer bikes. First off let me say that I encourage all you to post all of your thoughts/ideas/problems etc.

OK, let's start with some pics of the bike I will be restoring:

Bike is an 1989 GSXR750 purchased from 2nd owner for $800 a couple weeks ago. He had every service record since day 1. He was 47 and said that 25 years of riding it was long enough. So now that I am 47 and wanting to live my younger years all over I am building a bike the way I want it. Bike has 30k on it and runs and idles really well. Bike will be transformed into a 7/11 using a 1992 GSXR 1100 motor I picked up with 14k miles for $500 in Colorado. Here is a list of parts already purchased or the build along with parts still needed.

Purchased:
1) New Keihin FCR41mm flatslides
2) 2002 GSXR 750 swingarm
3) 1992 GSXR 1127 Engine
4) New Dyna 2000 system with coil packs and plug wires
5) K6/K7 GSXR 600/750 front end
6) K5/K6 GSXR 1000 upper triple tree
7) Yoshimura Race Duplex system (NOS)
8) Galespeed Type C 350-17 front wheel
9) Galespeed Type C550-17 rear wheel
9) 2008 GSXR 1000 Rear Shock
10) Braking WK front rotors

Wanted/Needed: (Depends on if you ask me or my wife)
1) 98/02 ZX6R Pro-Tek Rear Sets
2) Front and Rear Brembo or Galespeed Master Cylinders
3) KOSO RX2 Digital gauge
4) Lots of other badass parts

The plastics are 75/25. Only two panels are perfect. All others will require repair. All body work will be repainted in the original red/white color scheme. I imagine this project will take me 1.5-2 years to build, partly becuase I have a 9 yo and 3 other projects on going.

The last picture is myself at 18 on my first bike....1988 GSXR 750 and never looked back. Have owned 6 GSXR's all have been seriously worked over. I love these things!

Welcome

Sounds like you already know what you're doing so post a build / resto thread with lots of pics in the oiler sub-forum. We all love purdy pichers.

Red and white was best color scheme!!!! I was lucky....the bike is not perfect but for $800 it was way undervalued.

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Still in process of acquiring some of the parts needed so I took a little time to clean up the swinger, shock and linkage. Still on the hunt for a front end. Oh and the 1100 engine landed today!

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Had a slight setback today. Something happened to my knee getting the 1100 out of the truck today. Didn't pop or hurt until 20 minutes later and went to kneel down and a lot of pressure inside. Went to urgent care and put a needle in it as it had a lot of blood and was swollen. Only blood came out! Not good as something tore. Laid up and see if next two weeks get better or else headed to orthopedic. Sucks!

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Knee is feeling a little better will know more on Monday after MRI. In the meantime, I scored the front end I wanted (06/07 GSXR 600/750), which was the closest length to the original at 738mm or 29.05". Super nice condition with calipers and lower triple at a great price locally. Now I just have to research and figure out the details.

Searched the forum and it appears the easiest way to do the swap is press out my old stem and put it into the new lower triple and make a spacer for the top triple. Anyone have any input on this and can guide me in the right direction?

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Brand new in the box 1992 Yoshimura 1100 race exhaust was found on Friday in U.S. and will be purchased Monday. I was told this person may have more factory Yosh exhausts for oilers and I will provide contact info next week for anyone else looking once I get mine paid for. I ordered it with aluminum can.

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Completely dissembled the calipers and scrubbed everything and reassembled. Bottom legs cleaned and ready to go. Need to press out the stem of the lower triple so when I take the front end off the 89 I can swap in a day. This is the level of detail the entire build will be. Everything will either be new, painted, re-finished and detailed from top to bottom front to back.

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

After talking with the guy about the exhaust I am up in the air. There is no way for him to send me pictures so I can see the condition even though he says it is brand new. He owns a reputable motorcycle shop but who cant send pictures!! He does sound older and maybe still working in flip phone years! I have searched for hours today and finding exhaust systems for these oilers is difficult at best! Full exhaust with carbon canister, duplex race system is $1,150. $950 with oval stainless canister.

Thoughts?

Re: Going Back in Time 89 7/11 Build

Black K5/K6 upper triple tree will look nice with black front end. Upper fork dia. is the same, centers and offset the same between K5/K6 1000 and K6/K7 600/750. Once here I will measure drilled stem hole diameter vs. 89 stem dia. and make spacer. I opted for the one without the GSXR logo since the R is retro with point vs. the old school rounded R. No key as it will be hidden....

Hey Man, go to allballsracing.com and look in their fork conversion section you will be able to find the correct bearings to make that fork swap a breeze instead of pressing stems and making collars.
