89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Hello All,
I recently picked up an '89 gixxer with an aftermarket Yoshimura exhaust on it. My question is, is there supposed to be a band clamp that goes around the muffler and attaches to the rear foot peg bracket? Mine doesn't have one but does have a lug on the pipe a few inches down that bolts up behind the brake reservoir. Is that all it needs?

Thanks,
Nick

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Can you upload a picture? Some pipes come with a clamp design while others are designed with a lugnut on the pipe itself wich in turn bolt on to the foot pegs directly or with a rod in between but most yoshimura exhausts that i have seen if nit all come with clamps

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Ragnar's is a version I've never seen but my experience is with 2nd gens only. I did have one pipe that now lives in Australia that I got used that was a one piece mid & muffler that had a lug on the mid pipe section that bolted to the frame somewhere around the rider peg and rear master. It had an aluminum muffler can and came with no muffler can strap which I ran but eventually the mid pipe cracked just behind the lug. This came as no surprise because it was a lot of weight hanging rearward of that lug. I do not know if it was intended to be run without a can strap but it needed one. All other pipes I've had did have a can strap that mounted to the rear peg bracket.

If passing lanes only had passing lanes...

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Looking through my picture archive most 2nd gens don't have any bracket near the footpeg or just forward of that like mine but I did find a few, depends on the model of pipe I guess. Here is an AMA superbike with none and an RK that has one like mine, but all the other pics I have of similar bikes have none. I think the mid pipe is supported well enough by the header and muffler can, its not really needed.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Thanks for the replies. I attached a pic, hopefully it will show up when I post.

I just repacked the can and it's pretty light, I'm not too concerned with losing it or anything, but I did remove the rear pegs and brackets and thought it was weird that it didn't have a strap. You can see in the pic that it attaches to the front peg bracket, dead center under the brake lever.

Thanks,
Nick

My 89 1100 is attached the same. My 89 750 has the same mount but the can was cut off so I'm not sure if the pipe is a Yoshimura or not.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Mine looked similar but didn't have a joint at the mid pipe to muffler connection - it was a 1 piece... I'd run it but check frequently for cracks at the lug... and howbout some pic's of the entire bike??

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

I took a couple full pics of the bike, but it won't let me post them. At the bottom left of this page it says that "I may not post attachments", though I definitely did so this morning.

Anyway, thanks all for the replies. I was figuring I'd fabricate a clamp and bracket if I needed one, but I think I'm good. I'm not planning on riding this bike that much anyway, it's not particularly comfortable for me. I do like looking at it though.

Are the slabbies any more comfortable? They look like the bars may be a bit higher.

See ya,
Nick

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Sorry, I take that back. Once I went to post that last one, it went to the sign in screen and I realized why it wouldn't let me post a pic. So here you go.

Picked it up a few weeks ago off CL. It was sitting neglected in the corner of the guys shed, so I took it home and gave it some love. I do that from time to time to try and save something cool and turn it into a rider someone can enjoy. This one is in pretty nice shape, a couple of scrapes and cracks here and there and some non OE parts, but she's all there. Every time I stop somewhere somebody takes a pic of it. I've had some bizarre bikes, but this one is up there when it comes to being a conversation starter. You just never see them any more.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Ah ok, those are supposed to have canister clamps also but have been eliminated with the removal of the rear footpegs. All the yosh I've ever seen have the canister clamps.....looks good though

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

Thanks. I took the pegs off though. There was no clamp when I got the bike and the pegs were there.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

I guess for some reason the previous owner decided not to use it.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

For those of you still interested, Yosh offered more than one pipe for the 88-89 GSX-R750. If you have a mid pipe that has a tab like the one above, it didn't have a muffler clamp. You could certainly add one and if you have a spring-mounted muffler that would probably be a good idea.

None of the systems offered in their catalog had any similarities to the pipes used on the '88 AMA bike that was run at Daytona.

Sure they did, lots of them had canister clamps..........didn't know the ones with tabs didn't have clamps, thought they had both.

Clamp and bracket arrangement that was used in the short stroke era. This is from 1989. Note "hand finished" modification to clamp to suit "hand finished" modification to muffler, for clearance to the swingarm.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

I purchased a Duplex exhaust brand new in 1989 from Mike at Cycle Accessories West in Jacksonville, FL. Doyle Carter was the owner back then. I remember unpacking it at home - it came with an exhaust clamp, bolt, nut washer and also a thin strip of insulation material that was supposed to fit between the clamp and muffler.

It did not come with any sort of bracket to replace the rear footrest bracket - I purchased that the next day - it was just a piece of triangular aluminum with two different size holes in it to reduce weight - not sure who made it. These and many other parts were purchased for my brand new 1989 GSX-R750.

Re: 89 Gixxer Yosh Pipe Question

I just had a fabricator make me an exhaust bracket for my Yoshi pipe and on the other side, a bracket to eliminate the rear foot peg bracket and hide the seat lock under the cowl.
