how does the seat latch bolt on

i cant figure it out. trying to bolt the seat latch to either one of the cross members. i believe theres 4 screws that hold it down with nuts on the opposing side but the bolt holes just dont line up. forgive my ignorance as i have an 85 and i am converting it to an 86. this is the front latch, the gold one with the double tit acceptor. lmfao

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

Yup - just checked my 8611 - large gold metal assembly with edge 2 pin-holes & 1 central spring-loaded pin (not 2) on front crossmember, cable mounted to front left, mounted with 4 screws in the wider-separated crossmember holes with flanged nuts on bottom. Smaller black plastic assembly with 1 pin-hole mounted with diagonal 2 screws/nuts in narrower holes on rear crossmember, cable to left side. Never seen the 85 but the swap guide says 86 latches are supposed to bolt on the 85 frame if you move the big one to the front and put the small on at the rear.

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

see heres the funny thing, both of my cross members have the same bolt spacing. making it not possible to bolt the gold one on. both cross members have the same bolt spacing used in the lock latch, the spring loaded gold latch has a different spacing making it not possible... weird? i read the interchange and im confused to heck now

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

My crossmembers look identical too, can put either assembly on either crossmember. I thought the 85 had the big assembly on the rear crossmember? If so, and you say both crossmembers are identical it must fit on the front one.

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

my 85 frame doesnt have the bolt holes that the arrows point to in the picture.

thus the interchange is wrong

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

Sorry, my 85 frame had holes there, thus the entry in the interchange. I guess someone could have drilled them over the years ....but they appeared OEM to me ......

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

thing about that is that there is larger dime sized holes just out of line with the bolt holes that hold the little latch on. Therfore i dont have the "meat" to be able to sufficiently start banging new holes into the x member. Ill see if i can get some pics of what I have

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

Remember the '85 had a two piece seat and the '86 had a one piece. Maybe that's the difference

One of the '85 owners will chime in shortly and shed the light for all of us

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

My 750 frame that had a one piece seat had the four holes in both posts. So does the 1100 frame that I have. Sorry not sure about years.

I am aware of this. I usually run an '85 2pc seat on my 86 frame. As they are more comfy ....

And I have put an '86-'87 1pc on an '85 frame also ....

Here is a pic of the '85 seat I run on my '86, cant find the pics of the '85 right now, on my other HDD ....

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

This may help; on the '85, there is only 1 seat latch, the rear seat is screwed on.

Re: how does the seat latch bolt on

SO, you've now figured out that an '85 used the smaller latch in the front, as did the 86 Limited.

Two options:

Find a way to mount the correct latch assembly on the front.

Modify the seat to accept the post for the smaller latch at both points and install those latches in both places on the subframe.
