Short or long stroke

How can you tell the difference between the two
And how much different are they

Visibly there is no difference. The engine numbers will tell you what the year, hence stroke it is.




The short stroke were 748 cc's vs the long stroke 749.

Visual difference is a long stroke has a "bump" on the clutch cover.

One will say 748ccm2(short stroke) the other will say 749ccm2(long stroke) right on the jugs ......

actually,,the 90 91 has a bump on the clutch cover too,and they are long strokes,,the engine code is the easyest and surest way...if it's a 707 it's ashort stroke,,,anything else and it's a long stroke..

As is common with these bikes, covers ,even heads can and sometimes are changed for various reasons. Unless your 100% sure of it's history you just never know.

The engine number will indicate the cases, the 748cm2 will indicate the jugs and the dot on the head (pictured below) will indicate the short stroke head.

Depends on who you talk to.

Look at it this way, all oil cooled 750's were long stroke except for the 88-89, and even then the 89 RK was a long stoke for racing.

I think all the short stroke GSXR motors have a clutch cable that hooks to the clutch side cover instead of the output drive side of the motor.
all Katana are short stroke too. I think they have the DOT head too but I am not sure.

I think the 750 Kats went long stroke in 1998
I believe they also went to silver engine cases that same year.

short strokes generally known for softer low/ mid and punchier top end rush as well as a higher red line than 85-87 long strokes
long stroke better low/ mid range pull. 90 and later same high rpm red line and easier to tune. def like the long stroke for a street bike. if its a track bike and going to keep in high rpm really no diff except short strokes are more finicky tuning
