Steering stem nut socket

Has anyone found a cheaper alternative than the oem special tool to remove the steering stem nut and swingarm nut? I don't want to use a pair of channel locks or use a screwdriver and hammer.

I guess I could make one by grinding down a couple of 32mm socket but I want to see whats out there first.

Re: Steering stem nut socket

The steering stem lock nut can be removed using a regular socket (can't remember the size)....not a problem. I've never messed with the swingarm, so not sure there.

It's a 36mm. I'm looking at one as I type this. I just had to remove mine to install a stabilizer.

I think we are talking about two different nuts. The one's I am talking about are the two under the top triple clamp.

I think you need the special tool. In fact I think you need two of them.

Re: Steering stem nut socket

Alls you need for the to nuts under the top tripple is a spanner wrench. Here

For the swringarm either make yourself one from a socket with a grinder/dremel, or buy the oem one.

Who's got the best price on the "special" tool for the steering stem bearings and swingarm? Any info appreciated.

Re: Steering stem nut socket

Kowa and K&L have an entire set of locknut tools. About $120. In the set, they all come in little bags with Honda part numbers in them. Might be worth getting you hands on the Honda special tool catalog.

Re: Steering stem nut socket

You only need to know this one web site for unique must have tools. I had a steering head tool from them when I had my '02 R1 and is the best thing to ensure longer steering head bearing life, especially if you stunt.

I remember Scott from Checkeredflag (the stand guy) made a set of tools for the gixxer.

Re: Steering stem nut socket

I had one made last season when I rebuild my bike...some piping, same diameter as the washers (nuts), weld a nut (that fits any socket) on one end and grind the dogs out on the other....works fine....
