Best GSXR 1000 EVER

ive only owned 1 GSXR 1000 (a 2001).

I sold it 3 years ago and have had about 6 bikes since then.

I just sold a seriously modded FZ1 and have decided to leave great comfort and wheelies on demand (sprocket kit), to go back to a Gixer 1.

I'm considering models 01-04 (maybe 05) due to my budget and impending insurance cost increase.

Ive read a bunch of articles and reviews and of course, with each new model, the reviews have been great.

Out of curiosity, is there anyone who has ridden all of these models a fair bit to share how much significant different each newer model performed in all aspects compared to how much more $ Im going to have to spend.

One key thing ive considered is that I can get an older model with some VERY nice mods for less than some newer models stock.

Would you buy an 01/02 with full exhaust, maybe braided lines, commander and maybe even an A/M damper and shock if it cost less than an 03/04 or even a 05/06 stock? (Also, theres always an option of a slightly less modded 03/04.

A far bit for me to think about. thanks for your feedback

Re: Best GSXR 1000 EVER

there are pros and cons to each year bike.

k1/k2 - lightweight, a little down on power compared to the newer generations, brakes are ok, suspension is okay. looks great.
k3/k4 - a little heavier than the k1/k2, but good power, good brakes, good suspension, and the best looking gixxer 1000 ever imo.
k5/k6 - lighter than the k3/k4, with more power, better suspension, and better brakes. looks are ok, but the increase in performance is worth the sacrifice in looks
k7/k8 - heaviest of all the gixxer 1000's, but has the most power out of all the 1000's. brakes are good, suspension is good, looks are so-so.
k9 - ??? we will see.

depending on your budget, i would go with either a modded k3/k4 or a stock k5/k6.

Used to race, used to be fast, won a few championships.

obviously the older the model, the more the mods i can get for my $. but it sounds like i should discount 01/02. I had seen one with olins shock and damper and exhaust for less than a stock 05/06. tough for me to know whether the 05/06 would perform better (no doubt more power, but none of them really lack power for mostly street use).

Re: Best GSXR 1000 EVER

for street use, it really won't matter which you go with sinc eyou probably won't be getting close to the limits of even the stock stuff anyway.

a stock k1 with a good rider on it will perform just as good on the street as a stock k8. now on the track, where the differences really shine, is where the newer models will stand out. that is where a k1 with full ohlins suspension will be better than a stock k8.

but for the street? get whichever one you want, it really won't matter. if you aren't opposed to riding around on a stock bike, get the newest one you can afford. if you really need a modded bike, get an earlier one and throw some money at it.

me? i had a k3 with some mods, and then a stock k6.

Used to race, used to be fast, won a few championships.

i may track once or twice a year. i do find the 05/06 stock are priced at least $1k-$2k more than a loaded 01/02 and basic modded 03/04

newer the better. The 03-04 bikes had crap front brakes, and were not the greatest handeling bikes in stock form IMHO.

05-up bikes have great power, turn well, look great, are newer (and generally more reliable because of it), and have ok front brakes

The only bike I want more than my K6 is a K6-K7 750.

Pretty good list although I would say that the k1/k2 model has less than good brakes. I would say they are just alright or less based on the six piston calipers not having a good feel. Too 'numb' for my taste and a simple switch out for the 750 brakes solves this. Also, the stock size/ratio rear tire is slow turning if I recall correctly.

I have a k7 now and I agree but the weight is pretty easy to shed and most people do an exhaust anyway. So, if you can live with the looks (I actually like it so I'm not sure what everyone is bitching about) and plan on doing an exhaust anyway then the k7 is the cat's ass.

A right, not a privilege

Those are four piston Brembos too. Not the stock six piston calipers I was discussing.

The 01/02 is the best wheelying sports bike money can buy, period. This is followed by the 03/04. For good cheap fun anyone of these will do. From 05 on the balance point on the bikes seems smaller somehow. May be me but I still think the 01/02 is wheelie heaven. Stick some late madel brakes on it and you have a real fun bike.

Nigel.

Re: Best GSXR 1000 EVER

I have found my 08 G1K is much harder to balance wheelies on then my old 00R1.

the older G1K's and GSXR750's were wheelie heaven for sure...lol Make it easier for sure.

i disagree with the first part. the k3/k4 brakes were good, i remember passing a lot of people on the brakes on my k3. the switch from a 4-pad setup to a 2-pad setup kinda softened the initial bite of the brakes, but the stopping power was still there if you knew how to harness it.

the k3/k4 also had good suspension when it was set up for the rider's correct weight and riding style.

Re: Best GSXR 1000 EVER

someone mentioned wheelies. how are the throttle wheelies 01/02 vs 05/06? sorry, i see someone did address the wheelie comparison. i wonder if a mice 02 with aftermarket brakes and suspension would be as much fun as a stock 05?
